Not so short answer, while there are places where you will have little choice you can sometimes still find a choice. There are from what I've found very few areas where blowing things up in the only option, and most of them seem to be on javelins.
Even then if you are very careful about where and how you place them you can normally avoid damage to things you don't want it done to.
As to "dumb and dangerous"? You already have a cutting laser that can vaporise you if you catch your hand in it, a gravity gun that is harming you every time you use it and the first thing that the company did with you when you got here was kill you.
It's a bit late to be regretting having to do anything dumb and/or dangerous
Ppff and true, but this level of dumb and dangerous got one poor old grandma shipbreaker revoked her call home "Privilege", so it seems a whole new level of dumb and dangerous.
Oof, I can't upgrade to being able to cut grade 3 stuff until rank 15.
As Luci said, in the early versions they did try letting your laser upgrade to handle harder cut points. They nixed that.
It's one of the far more useful upgrades for the tool in that way as it covers both sides of that coin.
Making it a toggle would have been both more realistic and practical to fix the beam, than changing it to "Our profit based scum corp loves unreliable explosives mounted inches away from expensive components! Because we charged you a fraction of the value of the ship materials lost if they don't work well! GENIUS way to put workers into debt and rake in profits-wait..."
As a heads up, the disarm minigame might still be glitchy. I'm too worn out of late to regrind to demo charges (again) but last build I sent several bug reps about how the visual element of disarming demo charges is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ that it would often not even be facing the correct 3D plane.
and even when it was facing the right direction, it was so unreliable I just started literally closing my eyes and listening to the audio instead to disarm.
... in hindsight. Why was I surprised that when they added the hab they made it so the "look here!" arrows invade your vision when using the computer monitors.
EDIT: As for heat for melting. Max heat can let you stinger melt some of the more stubborn meltable panels juuuust before you overheat. But before max, cooling rate is more useful than max. because only the max heat upgrade is really worth a damn and the steps before max are practically worthless filler that still leave you waiting on cooldown.
Though the UI is still an orange heat meter so the heat meter might as well be absent from the game for most melting use unless you awkwardly skew your view so the corner of your UI will be facing an unrelated part of the ship.
