Buying Fallout 76 and Fallout 1st
I'm interested in fetching Fallout 76, but i'm afraid it's not worth it without Fallout 1st. Now it wouldn't be an issue if i didin't already opt in in multiple games with various monthly monetitzations, and this would just be one too many. How feasible is to play this game without Fallout 1st?

People played for an entire year without Fallout 1st.

You don't need FO1st... Period...

FO1st gives some additional bonuses, such as a monthly Atom stipend above what you would get had you spent the monthly payment just on Atoms themselves, and the ability to create Private servers... Otherwise, you get some additional in-game cosmetics, what is called a "Survival Tent" (basically just a second smaller, unalterable CAMP), etc...

The only real contentious feature is the Scrap Box, which does provide unlimited scrap storage...

It's not a huge deal as 800lbs in your Stash (about double what we started with) is plenty of scrap, plus extra gear, but it does indeed come in handy not having to worry about managing scrap...

I've been playing since release... FO76 is entirely playable with FO1st, but FO1st is indeed useful...

I'm over level 200, never had fallout 1st.

I will admit, i do often think "oh wouldnt it be easier" about getting 1st, but it's not required. You can't carry more items, it's just storing scrap, you get some cosmetics and emotes, the travel tent is nice, but none of it is required to play.

To give you an idea on that. My four characters gained an average of 200-300lbs pounds in the storage by moving all scrap to the scrap box. Which when you start figuring out how that extra space translates into extra weapons and armor it aint really that much since most high end guns weigh 15-30lbs each.

On the extra scrap storage side....well...lets just say I will not run out of scrap for a very long time Mostly because I grab nearly everything valuable and scrap it.

Private servers have a LOT of pros and cons. I spend 95% of my time on public servers.

Survival tents have a scrapbox, but the problem is they have no workbench to scrap at. The extra travel point dont really mean much since at some point you will have way too many caps anyways.

Fallout 1st is a want not a need in the enjoyment of Fallout 76.

Definitely Fallout 1st will make things a lot more convenient; i just tried it myself.

However, there is nothing that affects the the core gameplay which is where is the enjoyment comes from.

Yeah, pretty much... But, unless you're hoarding alot of extra weapons and armour, which is virtually pointless in of itself (just create a mule character to transfer to, with the help of someone you trust), 800lbs is an arse-ton of scrap...

And, just thinking, I can remember people screaming about how the Survival Tent being a free Fast travel points was P2W, blah, blah, blah...

It's been rendered mostly redundant by Public Teams, as your random team-mates' CAMPs become free travel points, also, and will give you access to workbenches and, more often than not, a Scrap Box (if you too are a FO1st sub)...

Only real reason to buy Fallout 1st is Scrap Box, same way with only real reason to buy ESO Plus (Elder Scrolls Online) is Crafting Bag. Both are unlimited storages for crafting materials for people who loot literally everything. Everything else is meh, not worth or cosmetics.

Maaaaaybe, for private world since if you dont have friends you can trust, its one and only way to transfer stuff between your characters. Since you always join random world, and cant control it, drop stuff somewhere and then pickup isnt an option - your characters will join different worlds. Unless its private world from Fallout 1st.

So, its more quality of life thing than something necessary. Not like DCUO where if you dont buy subscribtion your cash limit is barely enough to buy hp potion, or EVE where without subscribtion you cant use 90% of stuff.

Play it without fallout 1st, learn how to manage your inventory. Once you mastered the inventory management you can get fallout 1st. If you get fallout 1st the same time you get fallout 76. You might get stuck with full inventory later and have no clue what to do.

You also get a lot of atoms in the beginning of the game, so you might not need fallout 1st then either.

F76 is playable without the subscription. I was worried too. Until i decided to buy F76 during the steam summer sale event for 20 euros only. I haven't regretted it, most of the time at least. Hehehe. I have been tempted many many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ times to buy the subscription. It's not worth it. Don't buy it. You've already given them the cost of the game itself. It's kinda fun having those stash management dificulties. I have kinda already learned how to manage my stash after playing for 5 weeks only and having surpassed the 70 hours mark. For me it's tempting to try it for the private server only, as i am a solo player most of the time in just about every online game i have tried so far. If you experience a certain difficulty in managing your stash, then F1st is a must for you. I kinda see it as a challenge to finish the main story and to get all the achievements without the subscription. I will try to stray away from the temptation! Be sure to try to at least!

OP, I want to offer just a slightly different perspective to consider:

If you like PVP and competitive Co-op then ignore this next part. All of the posters have already given some great advice to answer the main question.

I LOVE the FO series and have played them all (SOLO) but I LOATHE PVP. If you're a FO fan that likes the Solo play, then read further.

I waited till I could get the game for next to nothing, joined FO 1st and can play w/o any hassles. I don't have to worry about people shooting at me, stealing my stuff or attacking my camps/workshops. I can have up to 8 of my friends join me on my private server and we can run the more difficult events by ourselves. I have full run to get any/all of the workshops and don't have to share resources with anyone and can use those sites as free teleport areas around the map to limit my travel caps (there's also a perk to help with travel). In the beginning you pick up everything, then you develop a playstyle that works for you and dictates what scrap to search for, and what weapons to pick up. I can do any of the events by myself even without assistance, although certainly there are some like clearing the Nuclear Silos that are much easier with friends. In regards to the scrap, I think it's a great value. I run between 6-750 pounds consistently in my storage without scrap. I don't want to worry about what dummy (mule) character I have what items on, and with the scrap box I don't have to. For me, just for me and my playstyle, it is well worth it. The extra portable camp is just another place to teleport that I put on the opposite side of the map from my base camp so with the workshops, my base camp, the small camp (tent) and my perk for travel, I pay relatively nothing to travel.

I don't have any other subscriptions so for me it was all a plus. Just my 1.5 cents.

If you don't have F01st then utilize the bulk mechanic at the tinker bench and self restrict your inventory. Watoga HS has lots of plastic via plates, forks, spoons, knives. I usually only have 5 of every bulk item in my stash. The weight reduction perks are great to have too (Ammo, Chems/Meds, Drinks/Food).

Bulking only saves weight on lead and aluminum.

You only bulk to sell scrap you have an excessive amount of. Some scrap you have to withdraw manually to sell because it can not be bulked.

Fallout 76 isn't worth it without a ton of Bygon, though ... or you'll get swarmed by it's bugs.

Here is what i told my friend that asked me about FO 1st.

Its a monthly payment for a monthly deposit of atoms. If you plan on buying atoms at all, its the best deal. The other stuff is just a bonus. They are not pay to win like some would try and tell you. At most its pay for convenience.

fo 1st is for only extremely dedicated players who play like 5hr+ daily
