I am in a similar situation with a 2nd account: accidentally put in a bad email address when Fallout 76 launched and asked for credentials (.net instead of .com) and there appears to be NO WAY to change this/start over. I opened a ticket with Bethesda about 4 hours ago, two hours after they responded and literally asked me to try something that I told them that I tried in the initial ticket to them :(
Go to Bethesda dot net and log into your account and link your steam account. Your bethesda name should be shown instead.
If that does not work , because 'reasons' uselly because your Steam account is already Linked, then you simply go to the settings tab and edit your account and change your bethesda account name. I think you can only change that name once per 3 months or something.
If you can't remember your password to get into your beth account then follow the steps for password recovery.
If all of that does NOT work. contact Bethesda Support. No one on Steam can help you.
Support can take days to respond, Good luck.

Oh and if i do find the file location I'll be sure to add it here.
I don’t know how to break it to you, but there is no file location on your PC that holds the display name. That information comes from the Bethesda.net account that is linked to Steam. You can only change it at Bethesda.net.
Bethesda generated it. Initially they were a long string of letters and numbers. Then beth changed them to random Elder Scrolls name and a number. But you can change it anyway.
If you know the email address used to link Steam and Beth it is easy just long in using that email.
If you don’t know the email address. All is not lost.
Step one. On Steam buy and install Doom 64.
Step two. Run Doom 64. Inside the game is a Bethesda, net option. This will tell you the email address used to link.
Step three. At Bethesda.net log in using the email addressed from step two. It will require you to create a new account. Once that is done, you can change the display name.
If you do not have access to that email address anymore you will be required to open a Bethesda support ticket.
