Display name/ID
When I go to social, my display name is some wild set of characters and numbers. When a friend looks for mr to join together they see this c867d59... etc and not a proper display name - how is it changed or can it be changed? TIA

That explains all the people with random letters and numbers I've been seeing. For me it uses my bethesda.net username but I have no idea how it works for people that never played prior to the steam release.

your name in game is not your steam name, its the username on your Bethesda account

I am in a similar situation with a 2nd account: accidentally put in a bad email address when Fallout 76 launched and asked for credentials (.net instead of .com) and there appears to be NO WAY to change this/start over. I opened a ticket with Bethesda about 4 hours ago, two hours after they responded and literally asked me to try something that I told them that I tried in the initial ticket to them :(

You should have started your own thread instead of necro'ing an old thread from April.

Go to Bethesda dot net and log into your account and link your steam account. Your bethesda name should be shown instead.

If that does not work , because 'reasons' uselly because your Steam account is already Linked, then you simply go to the settings tab and edit your account and change your bethesda account name. I think you can only change that name once per 3 months or something.

If you can't remember your password to get into your beth account then follow the steps for password recovery.

If all of that does NOT work. contact Bethesda Support. No one on Steam can help you. :cortex:

Support can take days to respond, Good luck.

https://bethesda.net/en/account/manage-account > EDIT ACCOUNT > Display Name > Save Changes

"You may change your display name once per 3 month period."

What you need to actually do is check to see if another Bethesda game hasn't started another account your Steam is connected to. Log out of Bethesda.net then go to log in screen. Clickie the "Help me find my account" link. Then enter every email account you have one by one and look for a winner. When you find it you need to complete that registration. If you want you can go ahead and unlink that account and link the one you want or just leave it. Fallout 76 will just use that account name. So think when you register it cos that's the name it will use unless you unlink it. Ta :)

You know all someone had to say is where the file with the auto login info was, and then we could fix it ourselves. Instead we get people say "You should have started your own thread instead of necro'ing an old thread from April". Yeah like that helps. Or even better. "No one on Steam can help you", ah yes the can but just won't. Again just read the first line, and the problem is solved. You angry and salty ppl don't help.

Oh and if i do find the file location I'll be sure to add it here.

I don’t know how to break it to you, but there is no file location on your PC that holds the display name. That information comes from the Bethesda.net account that is linked to Steam. You can only change it at Bethesda.net.

Steam generated the user to begin with... well ok then.

Bethesda generated it. Initially they were a long string of letters and numbers. Then beth changed them to random Elder Scrolls name and a number. But you can change it anyway.

If you know the email address used to link Steam and Beth it is easy just long in using that email.

If you don’t know the email address. All is not lost.

Step one. On Steam buy and install Doom 64.
Step two. Run Doom 64. Inside the game is a Bethesda, net option. This will tell you the email address used to link.
Step three. At Bethesda.net log in using the email addressed from step two. It will require you to create a new account. Once that is done, you can change the display name.

If you do not have access to that email address anymore you will be required to open a Bethesda support ticket.
