Since I can't save my game, when is it really saved?
New to FO76, I'm playing on Windows 10 via Steam.

I didn't see any save function, so when is my game actually saved? When I enter a building? Every 10 minutes? Something else?

Thank you.

it mostly just saves itself often, if you just leave the game at any time you likely wont lose any progress

Almost. It saves fairly constant (10 minutes? 5 Minutes?) while playing in the open world and on log out.

It doesn't save during quests happening at indoor locations.

It's an always online game so there is no way to manually save, and most definitely no way to restore one of the "auto" saves.

Certain quests will checkpoint and will save your progress at that point so you can pick up where you left off. Other quests you've got to get all the way through in one shot. If you have to leave the game while you are in mid quest, wait until you get a check pointed message.

Other than some quest progress, the only time I've ever "lost" anything was when the server crashed and I had like the last 5 minutes rolled back.

It autosaves every 10 minutes, and you will always save when you Fast Travel and Rest.

You can change the auto-save time in Fallout76Prefs.ini if you are concerned about losing things. But in over 1800 hours playing the game, I've only had maybe 5 instances where I lost time. Nothing to concern yourself about.

Character status is saved real-ish time, quest progress as mentioned above is checkpoint-based and sometimes it's kind of crappy, the final mission of the Scorched arc is really bad, maybe it improved but when I did it I realized I had to do it all in one go to finish it.

The mission where you look for Taggerdy has to be done all in one shot otherwise you have to start over again with finding the first repeater with one caveat. If you know where you are going to end up, you can skip the first 4 or 5 checkpoints and just go to the end one.

Yarp, every 10+ minutes allegedly.

You can edit the ini to make it save more often if you wish, along with other tweaks to make it more stable for some. Last I heard that wasn't ILLEGAL and it still let you play in that Battle Royale with Cheese thing, no clue if any of thats changed.

Never, you are stuck in the game. Accept your fate and become one with 76

if really concerned, change in Fallout76Prefs.ini or create a Fallout76Custom.ini and add/change

[SaveGame]
fAutosaveEveryXMins=1.0000

number corresponds to minutes between saves.

But seriously, the default settings are just fine.

Yesterday, after logging off normally, the basic tutorial quest steps were not saved. The quests or tasks to build a first weapon and armor were not saved. The fellow in the Wayward bar reappeared and I killed him outright, again.

I played over 10 minutes, outside the Wayward bar, before logging off. And yet today I killed him a second time when I re-entered, presumably because I did not accept her mission yet, so it reset the quest and dialogues to zero. Not very immersive.

For a quest with interior/instanced locations. You will get a checkpoint message on the screen. If it's not checkpointed, then you will have to do it again.
