Death is permanent you say?
What happens when you eventually run out of squad members? Can you recruit more? How does it work?

Seriously, no one knows?

So far it seems that you recruit survivors and thats the only way. But I could be wrong as I've only completed the first colony. If that's the case then I'd assume you lose if all marines are dead.

Think you can recruit from a pool and rescue NPCs on missions , hopefully they're marines

You can't recruit from a pool. You can either find a finite number of them via missions, or you can occasionally get an opportunity to recruit survivors in between days.

On the medium difficulty deaths can be pretty rare unless you make bad mistakes though, as you can often bring downed marines back to the APC to extract them.

I assume you mean in mission 1? Put a turret in front of the door, open door, activate suppressing fire, walk backwards.

Yeah in theory. Did this on my first attempt, only problem was that earlier in the lvl spawnt a crusher in the hive and came up behind me with 3 drones. On reload i killed the crusher first but one marine lost a leg, following an intense med evac stroll back to the surface. So next time i am gonna get the b**ch. :D

One of my marines lost his leg during an onslaught. The other one wasnt so lucky (he lost his bottom torso and his lunch)

You can't. If you lose a whole squad the game forces you to reload, so technically you can never have less than 4 soldiers.

You can, if they keep dying and you find yourself with only 3 soldiers left in total. But then you're screwed.
I don't know if everyone gets this or the game detected that I didn't have a squad available for a mandatory mission and decided to give me a free pass, but after the refinery mission where it hits you with the mandatory Otago defense, I didn't have any available soldiers and the game straight up gave me 4 free dudes as an event right before it. If this doesn't happen to just everyone then I'd imagine the game has some scripted events like it to try to keep you going.

i had the same event. i think it is hardcoded there to make sure you have a full squad

Some games are really lenient in this regard, but this one isn't. The other thing it's not lenient on is the soldiers' recovery time. I had one squad running the first four missions - to get some levels and such - and by the time the psychiatrist was online, they were barely able to walk, and having real unsafe firearms inspections.

With that said - that's good. I like that it's actually a real part of the challenge. You need to ro-ro-rotate your crews for science.
