1) If you are afraid of losing your pet or some other unpredictable problem, I recommend that you save your Icarus progress to a separate folder on another partition of the drive (or flash drive). (disable Steam clouds, otherwise, when you manually return your saves, there is a chance that Steam cloud will return the original saves).
-------->! You need to save the entire directory c:\Users\"name your windows account"\AppData\Local\Icarus\Saved
You can do a 'full rollback' with this.
2) You can try to ‘roll back’ the save via a backup file, which is done every half hour or when you exit to the ‘character selection’ menu; until that moment everything was fine.
Mission names usually consist of a set of letters and numbers. You can determine which save was from your mission by the fact that these *.json files will have to have the latest creation date.
A fairly detailed description (by analogy)

3) You can also try to restore via backup mounts.json (Natjur)

I would recommend you do the following from now on for all tames:
1. Don't leave any tames standing directly on the terrain.
2. Put them on floor/foundations at least 1-2 blocks above the terrain. Have them parked on upper floors.
Since I started doing the above, I have not lost a single animal. Mounts, chickens, cows, etc.
I think what's happening is that while rendering, the animals are either falling through the terrain, or animals are loaded in first before building parts. Predators move and attack your tames, and then all the building parts snap in and are rendered. I've had predators appear inside walls, with the walls unbroken, in areas that predators should have been blocked from spawning. This is all pure conjecture on my part. I have no clue how they're actually handling this programming wise. It's just one of the few explanations that fits exactly everything I've experienced.
I had a terranus stable on prometheus, and several animals were killed. I found death pallets for them. But oddly, there were holes in the _roof_. Then I realized they were being attacked by razorwings. But I never saw razorwings. I found dead bodies on nearby wall spikes, but not in the stables. The razorwings somehow aggroed on tames they couldn't even see in side the roofed stables, killed the mounts, then went berserk on the base... and all of this before I even got in range of the base.
This will destroy the idea of "free range", lol
Many thanks again guys
