I'm sorry but why are the character face models so hideous to look at?

Because making a model of a ‘beautiful’ character is quite a difficult task and much more difficult than it might seem, which is why such ‘ugly’ characters are present in many games. In order for everything to be ‘beautiful’, you need an appropriate specialist and he will definitely be highly paid, but this will be a ‘one-time’ job, so such a specialist is not needed on an ongoing basis.
At the same time, the personnel policy is determined by the company's management. For me: fairly average ‘normal’ faces, if you think this is not so, look at the photos on social networks.

Because they probably bought some pre-made character models. They're usually ALL pretty meh looking. The character I use for my main character I call "unibrow".

Does it matter? I never see my character's face, unless I'm up at the station.

Zero issue you see them when you log in and then never again honestly my character could not even have a face and it wouldn't bother me lol.

Many games have ugly female characters because of DEI initiatives not because its difficult to make attractive characters which it isn't. If it was we wouldn't have been doing it for 20+ years of gaming lol. In the case of icarus I think they just didn't care about the characters appearances to much.

We agree.

We actually priced up redoing the characters, and it is very expensive.

Ideally we would redo the characters, and have it so they can remove their helmets. I am secretly hoping we can drive a lot of sales and put this back on the plan. But it is a lot of cost that we probably can't recover.

You could make it a contest and have people create and export it to a format that you can imported to your engine. The character you like the most wins and they win having something they made being in your game and their name in the credits.

Just make sure to stipulate that there will be no royalties or any other kind of monetary reward and that the creation will be gifted to and copyrighted by the company.

If people can agree to that, then Bobs your uncle.

They are some of the ugliest character faces I have seen though the only times you see your character's face is in the character creator and character select screen. Has no impact on the game itself and would take away from other worth while content to be created.

No need to redo them if it's that demanding, maybe just give us an option to not see their faces in the menu (a toggle in option, maybe replace them with animals instead or something)? or maybe let them wear their armor and helmets (already in the game) as if they had them equipped (again, as a toggle, so people that like looking at ugly faces can keep doing it)

You could sell them as a prettyhandsomeness bundle DLC (faces, hairs, cosmetics, etc). I would buy it.
