DE's can stomp over early cathay fairly easily though, and lokhir's bonus arcs can be interesting in the cathay waterways.
Im... not fond of rakarth in lustria (he was my favorite back when he was close to the empire) nor of malus's arctic start (I thought his old start was much more unique)
The big learning curve for DE is that you should pick the after combat options that give you slaves every single time ("enslave captives" after field battles, and "sack" or "loot and occupy" after settlements. Never straight occupy with DE). And the lord skill that gives extra captives after battle is good too. Slaves are your economy. You want as many of them as you can get.
