Is This Game Bare Bones Without DLC?
Haven't played it, and while I've seen worse, I noticed that this game has a lot of DLC. Is this one of those games that feels unfinished without DLC?

Not really. The DLC are all new races and faction lords. All the DLC factions are still in the game and on the map, even if you dont have the DLC, you just cant play them yourself. So for the DLc the best way is to only buy the factions/lords that seem interesting to you and you want to play yourself.

DLC unlocks extra races or stuff for the base races. If you're not interested in particular races then there's no need to buy their DLCs. All that content is still available for/as the AI so you only buy what you want to play with/as.

Nah, It's actually more you get the game but the DLC is for choosing which factions you want to play. All factions will still be there in the game.

So it depends on who you want to play. But unless you actually want to play every single faction and lord you don't have to buy them all.

OK, so I'm not missing a ton if I don't have DLC, then? You know, aside from playing those factions? Is it all just factions?

Most races have DLCs that you should get if you want to play as them though.

Okay, thanks for the responses. These DLCs don't sound concerning. It just looked like a scary wall of price tags.

As a single unit the price looks intimidating, but not many people are going to buy it that way and it's be wrong to think of it as such.

Think of it more like a menu at a restaurant, you'd be crazy to try and eat everything in one visit, but if you like the food you'll likely try different dishes next time you eat there. So if you're fighting against a race and you like what you see, maybe look into that specific one's DLCs. Or maybe just look into one or two additions that are best value for money (the previous base games on sale are good for that).

What you should do is looking at the factions before buying the DLCs. There are usually free Lords for every faction available. Play them for 20 rounds and see how the factions plays. If it is absolutely not your cup of tea you know that the other factions which are hidden behind the paywall are probably also not gonna float your boat and therefore not worth getting.

I've been playing this game since release of the first. I'm simply not interested in Wood Elves so I never got the DLC. I'm missing out on nothing because the factions are on the map anyways and as I don't wanna play them I don't need to pay for a DLC.

On the other hand when you find a faction that you enjoy you should get all the DLC for the given faction as some RoR units need DLCs to be available to the player.

The DLC isn't necessary, but in modes like the Immortal Realms campaign, it's very nice to have the DLC that opens certain factions up, like the Wood Elves or Tomb Kings, or Beastmen, or Norsca...so it adds up--as planned by corporate, I'm sure. That much said, this is the culmination of 3 TW games worth of DLC, so I figured after all has been said and done over the years, on sale I got the complete toy chest for about $200 (all the games and all the dlcs so far). And once you start adding the great mods out there--Mixu's Legendary Lords, for example--you literally have a complete collection of 23 or so races, countless subfactions, and dozens of new units. It's all really a little overwhelming, and looked at in the grand TW sense, it's a steal; )

Yup, the DLC isn’t necessary unless you want to actually play as that LL or faction.

They’ll still be in your game for you to fight and interact with if you don’t buy them.

Additionally, IIRC any content made for the base factions that isn’t unique to a specific DLC faction was made FLC and released via update alongside the DLC at the time. So you don’t have to worry about missing out on any content for base game factions too.

I'd say biggest "downside" to having just main game(s) is that you get very vanilla/balanced style factions. I like way more specialized factions personally, but obviously that's matter of preference.

After they made IE free I would say the game is incredibly content filled even without any DLC.

We can't thank enough CA for that decision.

Just to clarify, a DLC for this game can add access to races (different new armies) factions (within those races, lead by a legendary lord, many factions have unique mechanics) and units to a race.

So its not "just factions" (no matter how someone chooses to define factions, races, sub-factions, etc).

That said, all of it will be there as enemies, its just if you wish to personally make use of it that you need the DLC.

That said, you can trivially clock up hundreds of hours of play without touching mods. I've never felt the need to do so, but they allow tailoring of the game to your likings.
