So there is no storyline you were missing, nothing you needed to know about part 1 and part 2 before jumping into 3.
Instead, the changes and additions between 2 and 3 alone are way too large to even consider playing the older titles again. You are exclusively missing out on at least half the content.
> Many more new WH3 factions which don't exist in WH1/2, including the quintessential Chaos Gods
> Reworked and updated old factions, like the Warriors of Chaos in WH3 are incredibly fun to play compared to their older implementations
> WH3 map in the Immortal Empires campaign covers the entire world of Warhammer, which makes it about twice the size of the WH2 map in Mortal Empires
(albeit on a downsized overall scale, and there are some inaccessible areas south of Cathay)
> Large amount of QoL improvements and new features, like a quick finder for trade deals (a huge pain to do manually in WH2) or the ability to trade cities with other factions.
3 has the Immortal Empires map AND the Realm of Chaos.. IE has EVERY faction..
dlc packs from 1 and 2 work in IE map too btw.
The way it works WH1 and WH2 are nothing but DLCs for WH3 at this point.
WH3 has a huge map integrating the continents of all 3 games, while WH1 misses all the content from WH2 and WH3, and WH2 misses all the content from WH3.
If you want to play as certain factions, then you'll need their DLC, this includes WH1 and 2 base games, and their original races too, the DLC from WH1 and 2 also unlock stuff for WH3. So yeah, WH3 is Total War Warhammer, the rest is nothing but DLC for it.
You have game 1 on epic so you need to buy any further content on epic as well or you won't be able to play any of the combined content.
