Are Forsaken supposed to be a less mutated Chaos Spawn or something?
Why do they have morale and rout away when scared? Their description makes it sound like they're spawns that chaos warriors become, but....they all kind of suck. And they run away scared.

forsaken are if im not mistaken severely mutated versions of the regular chaos warriors. but they do still feel fear and other stuff and can run away.

a chaos spawn is more like a zombie brute or similar. no soul no mind at all its just a beast with nothing in there . like a fleshy doll thats controllable. i think.

They are failing Chaos minions who are on the way of becoming indeed mindless Chaos Spawns (after failing their patron, having too much Chaos corruption / mutations, etc...).
So yes, they're still conscious and therefore have morale, but are ultimately doomed.

They are also known as "half-spawn".

Basically a forsaken is what you get when someone's mind is too powerful to turn them to spawn, but their bodies are not powerful enough to hold all their blessings.

Once they have turned into forsaken their minds kinda break anyway, but they are already in their new somewhat stable forsaken form at that point.

Occasionally the gods actually show mercy to a forsaken that has done their bidding and return its personality and memories.

Failing completely (aka becoming a spawn) ends up with a more powerful but also more mindless end result.

Depends of your point of view.
If you're a follower of Order, yes, you can say they're all doomed, but if you're among Chaos guys, they actually succeed in obtaining glory / immortality / etc... (ex : Valkya)

This reward / boon / glory relationship is represented in the (WoC) recruitment system (notice how they're fewer in numbers as they progress their "career" path) :
Marauders > Chaos Warrior > Chosen > Aspirant ( > Heroes/Lords > Demon Prince)

Unfortunately, what they didn't show is that anyone can become a Chaos Spawn (you could believe you're safe being a Chosen, but alas...)

Note : And that's also part of a reason why this system fits WoC, and shouldn't be available to other factions...

yeah i prefer being an order person personally.
Once you join chaos your soul is doomed to be consumed and used by your patron god and you’ll never know true rest in the afterlife so your definitely doomed no matter what

Failing?

I thought the mutations were all gifts of the chaos gods, and that they're viewed with some degree of awe and reverence by the others in the tribe.

... don't know why considering how much weaker the spawns and forsaken are than actual chosen and chaos warriors

Mutations are generally considered a blessing (and a curse) by the followers of chaos indeed.

However forsaken are those whose physical form is unable to contain their blessings and thus mutate further driving them insane (well, more so then normal chaos warriors).

Just like chaos spawn often is a champion of chaos that that fail to evolve and ends up devolving instead. Forsaken are in the same category, they just didn't completely succumb to it like a chaos spawn have, the process being halted at a stage where they still have a largely recognizable human form and not being completely mindless like a chaos spawn (but still being pretty much broken in both mind and body).
