You know, get gud.
That sounds boring as hell, why do people play this?
This game is about formations, counters, line of sight and manoeuvers. But to be more specific, you should provide info on who you want to play.
Are you throwing your whole army at the enemy and forming a giant blob? Are you sending Cavalry into Halberds? Are you putting guns directly behind your front line? We need details in order to give accurate advice. Otherwise all we can give is generic tips like "don't do the above things I mentioned."
Guard your flanks from enemy cavalry.
Play on slow-motion at first if you need to. Pause to issue commands or read ability/spell descriptions, then unpause.
Learn which skills are best to take on your lords/heroes. Some stats are more useful than others. If you put skill points in stuff like improving public order, then that character will be weaker in battle than it otherwise could've been.
Formation:
Line up melee units in front.
Place missile units behind them.
Position cavalry and fast units on the sides.
Group units by selecting all and pressing G (preserves formation).
General Rules:
Melee: Strong in melee, slow, durable.
Missile: Ranged, weak in melee, fast, vulnerable to cavalry.
Cavalry: Very fast, strong charge, weak in prolonged combat.
Combat Strategy:
Missile Superiority:
If you have more missile units: Approach to maximum missile range, let the enemy
come to you.
If the enemy has more: Charge with melee units quickly, use missiles for support.
Melee Tactics: Overwhelm enemy melee with numbers and damage. Support with
missile and cavalry.
Missile Tactics: Keep shooting (can flank and shoot from behind), protect from cavalry.
Cavalry Tactics: Flank the enemy, charge from behind, retreat, repeat. Target missile units and fleeing enemies.
