I tried all the major overhaul mods and didn't like any of them. The Old World Campaign is an okay mod, and there are some pretty good ones (in terms of production value) out there that add new factions or change existing ones.
The ones that change factions tend to add too much crap, and make the faction excessively OP. I haven't tried too many of those, though, so it might be that just a few mods are that way.
The players that go to the forums are in the minority though, so if you want some actual data about how many use mods, this isn't really the place to get it (saying this before certain someone comes to shill mods, and assumes that because a couple of people on the forums say they use them, the majority of players do. But if you're just curious and/or want to discuss random ♥♥♥♥, then whatever.
But once the mods that I use are updated then I only play with them and have a much better experience.
You may not like all of them, but some will make the dish tastier and more of your liking
In WH2 I still played vanilla each time a DLC got out, but new factions always are ridiculously strong compared to anything else in the game and that gets boring quickly.
Since I usually want to keep playing or at least finish my current campaign I probably won't even update and stay on 5.3.0 a little bit longer until mods got updated.
Fixed
I play it without mods. Stop with the hyperbole. It distracts from your point.
I can't be assed to maintain a mod list nor do any of the mods really strike me as must haves.
Agreed. I need 40 of them, just to make it enjoyable.
And these "overhaul mods" So... the devs didn't get one thing right? You needed to change every single stat, for your OCD "balance"? forget it. All you are seeing is the inside of someones damaged brain.
Don't bother with mods.
And that's your opinion. Mods offer a great amount of replay to this game. Not all mod users have huge overhaul Mods that change everything about the game. 90% of the topics on this forum could be eliminated if people would use a mod that changes whatever it is that they are crying about. Don't like siege battles...there's a mod for that. Don't like the AI...there's a mod for that. Want the game harder or easier...wait for it...yup a mod for that too.
I dont see any as a "must have". The only overhaul-mods that is my exception is the old world since it changes the map & setting, tried SFO in WH2 and went back to vanilla after 30 minutes.
That said, definitely play the game a decent amount in vanilla first before you install mods. You should always have an understanding of what you're trying to improve or change before altering the gameplay. For graphics mods (e.g. the Siege Towers mod), this obviously doesn't matter as much. But for gameplay-altering mods you should have experienced vanilla first.
