Have you actually wondered about that at all though?
You don't need the dlc and remember these games released with less units than they have now as free stuff was added.
But I need every single lord right now even though I'll likely not finish a long campaign of a single one of them... CA is evil!!!!!!!! (jk lol)
DOTA2 has all heroes available at least, unlike LOL which you have to play tons to unlock them. But they release a new one very inconsistently, several months to over a year between each one in DOTA2.
To give you some examples; Helldivers 2, you can earn everything for free, easy if you play regularly. I know for a fact some people use cheats to skip the super credit farming, too. Deep Rock Galactic, you can earn everything but some cosmetic DLC, and enjoy all updates at no cost. Terraria is getting updates to this day, and it has zero new DLC (aside from soundtrack) or microtransaction.
CA only looks generous because gaming industry is such a dumpster fire, at least when it comes to many big publishers. The bar is in hell. Well, credit where it's due, they do give out free content and faction updates, among other things, so that's nice.
I don't think this game is unreasonable with DLC at all, though the quality of their content is questionable at times. I prefer this over microtransactions.
And like others have no doubt already said, investigate before you buy. Complaining about the DLC model after purchasing the game just makes you look stupid.
I hardly think unlocking a couple of new items or whatever through gameplay is the same as giving away 10+ years of development.
Tbh Empire did add things interesting for me, and Cathay I have a hardon for realism, but the flyers and grenadiers would otherwise be fun
i don't really care for Dark Elf DLC units. I could live without them. High Elf probably needs the variety. I don't think Vampire Coast and Norsca have DLC unfortunately
well that's 3 / 4 of the factions I often play. Maybe you should get DLC lol, but you can pick and choose. And they often go on sale
I started playing with Warhammer 1, so I've been buying DLCs from time to time. For someone playing since 2016 feel less painful due buying the DLCs little by little along 9 years. However for someone who just joined it is extremely expensive even on sale. CA should release more bundles with reduced price, I'm pretty sure a lot of players refuse to play the game for the amount of paid content.
I'd rather have an option to buy skins for legendary lord and units in online pvp and singleplayer and have free new units. Whatever, even add and sell new lords like you do now, I don't care since I don't have to play specific lord.
But by locking units you definitely will not see me in multiplayer because that's P2W. I can't field an army compared to my opponent if I don't pay up to CA. And you cannot unlock things by progressing the game in any way.
I do a campaign with some faction, and you just say I cannot use something because I need to pay you. Meanwhile even the NPC running around the map uses those units. And I can get those units in some ways and play them, you just block the option to recruit them from my own buildings in a normal way.
That's some BS and in my opinion those who disagree, you just live in this Gamesworkshop's/EA's bubble of always paying and being milked for cash.
Heck even P2W MMOs are better since I can buy whatever items I need from other players by using ingame gold.
Because Total War is a predominately single player franchise.
Play what you bought, buy what you want, get what you pay for.
Because some people are sadly incapable of understanding basic concepts.
Nowhere except for MMOs, god awful mobile games, and government-run slums are freeloaders like you subsidized by those who pay into the system. You can want handouts all you want, but you won't find them here.
