Stead Deck in 2025

I know this question has probably been asked, but I can't seem to find an updated post that somewhat recent, so maybe things have changed.

My PC is on it's last legs and My wife is thinking about getting me a deck to "replace" it. For the most part, this will actually allow me to be more comfortable when I play games, and by and large, all the games I play have great native support... except this one.

I already kind of struggle at this game, and playing it without M&KB is a little bit of a worry. I also keep reading that Immortal Empires doesn't work great on the Steam Deck. I'm not too fluffed about graphics, and if I can get it to play nice even on the lowest settings, I'll be happy.

This game is just a great catharsis for me and it'd be a shame if I wasn't able to play it in some capacity.

ProtonDB shows mixed results. Based on the reports there I would only try it on the Deck if you are really comitted, otherwise a good gaming Laptop would maybe the better choice here.

You can get a mouse and keyboard for the steamdeck. Admittedly, at that point you might as well get a proper computer (A laptop if you want it to be more mobile).

They recently shut down rumors of a Steam Deck 2 (saying it isn't happening, for now at least). So wouldn't hold my breath.

It does work, with 45s-1m:30s load times for campaign/battle maps on medium graphics settings across the board, and "Large" unit size. If you can, use the dock to use a keyboard and mouse, or use one of a few different community control layouts.

It takes getting used to, but it is playable, for sure.

That's good to hear. I know it's not going to be perfect, but I'm glad to see it's available.

I found a video of someone playing a battle and using the touchpads, it seemed quite workable. I'd probably want to play it docked mostly, but it seems doable.

DONT buy a laptop, I own a MSI I9 16g ram with the RTX 4090 in it and it really does not compare to my I7 10700k with the RTX4080 super 32g ram tower around (3600$ invested in it over 10 years). bang for buck build a nice tower 1500-2500$ I9 with RTX 3070 or higher and 32g ram. My steam deck is "ok" for 600$ plus my 1tb HD (89$) just spend a few more and get a good tower. I have noticed that steam deck games that say unplayable just need a mouse and keyboard, i bought a mini keyboard with a built-in mouse and got a C to C and hdmi cord so i could plug in my Dongle for the keyboard and still charge my device. when i did this almost any game that has a control issue was gone, with that said some games like this one demand more power and that's where the steam deck fails. My wife is still playing games like Assassins creed and RDR2 with no issues, i'm playing Spider man 2, expedition 33, Schedule 1, forza 5 and The settlement alliance without any problems. so in all there is about 25% of my 220 steam games that i just cant make work on my steam deck and for some that's a hard hit if money is tight and you want to enjoy your other games.
