Need the Legendary campaign difficulty for there to be any kind of challenge but once you've snowballed any semblance of challenge completely drops off anyway but that has always been the way with this game in my experience!
At least with Normal battles you can slug it out man for man without relying on ranged units so much, again in my experience.
Play whatever works and is fun for you
I don't use Legendary simply because I like to reduce the game speed and watch the fights sometimes or video record massive amounts of spells used.
Nothing is funnier then Kairos + 19 birds using Blue Flames against Belakor in slow motion.
I play video games to relax, not to face some kind of greater challenge.
In the end its just about your personal fun, play on what appeals to you.
I never go above NORMAL difficulty in games.
I will be jumping up to hard/hard at least after a few more sessions and as my pace of play speeds up though, as was my norm for older TW games. I probably won't ever reach legendary level though as I play for fun over outright challenge.
As far as other ppl are concerned, just go with what works. There's no shame in not running everything on hard and up... nm some campaigns here are naturally trickier than others. A little secret of mine (though not a thing for this series)... Due to a significant backlog I really want to get through and preference for a smoother rate of progress and hating being stuck overlong in many games/genres, I use adjustable difficulty in other games when multiple tries at a roadblock don't succeed.
I spend a long time playing normal normal, and switched to VH only when I became to be bored.
