Total War series games always require frequent controls by mouse and keyboard. You can hardly do that by the joysticks, tiny touchpads and the very few buttons of Steam Deck.
Secondly, checking unit stats from unit cards is a must during battle. Obviously, the screen size of Steam Deck is too small.
Yeah but i think the point of nearly all people who ask and want to play it on deck is on the couch without monitor and mouse/keyboard ( at least it's my case :D )
Edit : i did more test , and you can use cloud save from windows to deck and the other ways too.
My deck just crash one time on 2 load of campaign.
Not the best but doable
Just commenting to say this is not true.
The steam deck has amazingly customizable controls to a huge degree.
Regarding checking the unit cards.... the steam deck has a magnifier option but frankly I don't find the unit cards hard to read. The SD screen ismassive for a handheld and I can read the unit cards just fine even in 40v40...
There are so many buttons and context options and customizable elements on the steam deck controls you can absolutely play any game on the planet with it hands down (just requires someone to make a suitable control scheme).
At this point I'm just as proficient playing on the deck as with keyboard and mouse.
It's that good.
I've been playing Wh3 immortal empires on the deck with minimal problems.
It could use a little official love to be even better but the controls are a complete non issue.
Currently the game isn't optimized at all for steam deck. The battles run fine but if you try and run it off the deck natively you'll have to fiddle with some proton compatibility options to get it to work. Something in the games architecture is causing it to crash when run off of the deck on the campaign map layer.
it's definitely not the graphics, because I can run more taxing games like W3, GoW, RDR2, cyberpunk 2077 on good graphic settings with no issue.
The problem is absolutely under the hood where something about the campaign layer causes a crash on the deck specifically.
Edit: to be clear, wouldn't have tried this and then been so happy with the result~
The only downside is that linux is still on version 3.1 - you can’t play shadows of change or get the latest tweaks.
You understand that various TotalWar games have been ported to iOS, right? It doesnt compare to playing on PC but while out of the country for travel I was able to enjoy myself playing Rome TW on my iphone lmao. I have to imagine the experience can only be more enjoyable on the deck.
