How do you figure it's not supposed to be an enjoyable faction? Do you really think the design team at CA sat down and set their goal for Bretonnia to be unfun?
I have not made a complete campaign with them but I have played until bretonnia and estalia were secured, and I didn't notice anything particular.
That's actually exactly what I did on my latest attempt. But I did it using a bait settlement and a little help from Orion. I'm just not sure if they intended to feel this weak in the early game.
What kept happening to me was I didn't focus very heavily on Grom and couldn't win a field battle against him for the life of me. So I'd either get rekt by facing Grom or I'd end up fighting Morghur and Ikit and once I was weak Grom would roll in with a Waaagggh to boot. It did not end well.
I did in a few of them, yeah. The reinforcement time hinders them a little bit instead of like in WH2 where you get them right out the gate. I don't think it was a major contributing factor but it was definitely a nerf for that startegy. To be fair Grom can be killed with just the starting Paladin she gets and usually doesn't even need support for that. It really comes down to Ikit and Morghur. Ikit has a ton of rat stacks and I would bet that beastmen can now move around in Hidden Encampment stance, but I haven't actually played them yet to confirm. This makes Morghur way more dangerous because he's basically invincible to bretonnia early units, even the Lords it seemed. Had him kill my lords and Paladin while barely taking any damage.
I should update this post though and say that I did find a way through the early game, at the cost of a Lord getting ambushed by accident. Basically I just took Quenelles and used it as bait to lure Groms armies into the settlement, and then used the settlement layout to force them to fight me in choke points which worked great for the peasant archers and trebuchets. I basically didn't recruit any calvary for a long time and as Bretonnia that just feels so weird. When I rushed cav they were so expensive I stayed in the negative for income, not to mention they actually did not help much and I can admit it could be user error. But it felt like they just did not do enough damage to route units on Hard battle difficulty fast enough to kept the infantry line from breaking. Morghur also has a pretty nasty army for early game. He gets Razorgor Chariots, minos, chaos spawn and a bull hero by the time he's within striking distance. I just couldn't rush the units fast enough to have an answer for those. Adding to this autoresolve actually helped me win some fights I would not have won had I fought them manually.
I don't know. I'll admit there are strategies, cheesey and valid, that probably would have worked like having better micro and kiting units with horse archers but I couldn't really get that to work either since he also has chaos warhounds which will beat skirmish cav and are fast enough to catch them.
Anyway I'm mostly just looking to see if others feel the same way at this point or if it's just entirely me. Early game for them feels absolutely brutal.
