Difficulty ? Also if i recall correctly the AI don't actually delete unit, that's why when you defeat one of his first army (with basic unit) he come back with the same lord but a updated army with better unit.
Putting my money on this as well.
OP, did you build the landmark in the Silver Pinnacle without checking its effects?
Also they the stacks kept spawning until the landmark was build which takes 10-12 turns I think? So be ready before starting to build
guess thats an ungrim/dwarf's exclusive landmark? having taking ownership of that as karl franz in previous campaigns, never noticed such a thing before
Because you didn't read the tooltip of the building. A tooltip that clearly tells you:
"Ward and seal the tombs to purge the Hold of the Undead!" in green, to explain what you're doing. And
"Warning! the Undead will try everything in their power to stop the purging!" in red, to explain what other factions (in this case the undead) are going to do.
Until you've completed the purge, that is to say the full 10 turns it takes to "build" the landmark, the undead will attack you.
If they take the city it will stop the purge and they will no longer spawn armies to try and stop you (although I suspect you'll still be at war with them), at least until you go back in and try it again.
