Like you said you want a runesmith in your army anyway for their buffs and rune magic isn't good enough to warrant having a second dude in the army to cast it at the cost of melee stats, so might as well stick to the lord
The generic lord meanwhile gives some pretty decent buffs for dwarf melee units, extra movement range and replenishment, and 5% physical resistance for miners, warriors, and longbeards, I kinda wish that extended to hammerers and ironbreakers too but some not bad editions along with some interesting self buff picks.
Dragonslayers are pretty damn strong in combat, they get hurt fast yes with no armor but they will put the hurt on most duelists and you can counteract their damage but buffing their melee defense, as their personal skills already buff their attack already.
In terms of army buffing the slayer isn't the greatest, they mostly just make slayers cheaper and heal faster and a little stronger. The perfect combo for going against say the Ogres or other factions with lots of large enemies but outside of malakai or ungrim I wouldn't use them as a staple army.
So for thorgrim, ironhammer, and grombrindal lords are my go to choice.
Special note though if you play as malakai you can make slayer units extremely cheap like slayer pirates cost as low as 27 upkeep if I remember fight, I'd def suggest getting the dlc sometime to try the slayer tide out.
