Default mod manager is worthless.
Often, mods that show as outdated will still be playable. That said, if you try playing with an outdated mod to see if it still works, you should expect a crash and be happy if it doesn’t. Load up the game and try a custom battle to test them out. If all looks well, create a new campaign and see how it goes. It takes time and patience, but for me, it is always worth it.
The worst for me was when I was running nearly 200 mods, and it took all day to get the game running without a crash or other glitches. My advice as a mod user: be patient and methodical!, because it's worth it.
I hope I did not patronise you as that was not my intent
