Need advice
So I'm thinking of getting this but I have never played a Total War game ever. So is it a lost cause or very hard to get into? Planned on getting it much sooner but back then it was mostly negative on reviews so.... x)

Since it seems like the devs are doing better now + the Steam sale is on it felt like a good moment to maybe get into it, but no point if it's super hard

Thanks!

Not really, particularly since, unlike the previous games, this one has a tutorial. It doesn't tell you much about the each race's or subfaction's unique mechanics, but it does teach you the basics of how empire management and battles work. There's still some learning for you to do yourself, but it's not that bad, and if you don't want to learn it yourself there are plenty of guides online and on Youtube that'll teach you too.

Probably the easiest Total War game to get into. At least on the strategical level.

There is a huge focus on the overall production value; i.e. how the factions are designed, presented, with unique soundtracks for each faction, unique voice acting for each Lord, and all that. So there is an immense amount of replay value just based on this.

Combat is definitely more complex than in the historical TW games. As you can imagine, a fantasy game with flying monsters, magic, war machines, immortal superheroes and such has more to offer than anything historical with just three flavors of infantry being the same for all factions.

Overall people like to complain about the game being too easy, rather than the opposite. But the "game 2 ez lol" complainers usually watch all those exploit streamer videos and imitate those playstyles, so they likely don't even know how the game is like when approaching it completely unbiased and unaware of unfair options for the player.

TBH i'm mostly seeing the same complaints like in every _single_other strategy game.
Just that this game is several times better produced than the competition.

Ratings shouldn't matter much. The game has an extremely toxic minority fanbase, which is very keen on sabotaging the game development by review bombing.

Safe to say that this is the top #1 strategy title of its kind, for the past decade or so.

people complained about 3 & DLC due to cost and features, review bombing.
It is a great series. people get more angry because they value it, and take anything they don't like personally.

If you want a cheap introduction, buy wh2 and try it.
It is faster if you have a slow computer.
I would consider getting 2 & 1 then you can play all races from both in wh2.

Game is turn based, battle is real time but you can play on slow time and pause.
Mechanisms differ between 1,2,3 and even different modes in each game.
The DLC and races in previous (1&2) also allow you those features / races/ lords in the later game.

depending on what packs are on sale.
I play 3 and 2, but 3 is much slower on my machine due to not being on SSD.

some starts are much harder than others.
Try it.

Each race has very different functionality playstyle and mechanics.

Nothing. If you play less than 2hrs you can just refund it.

See if you like it, if not, refund.

I wouldn't say it's hard to get into, tw warhammer 1 was my first total war game ever. This one even has a warcraft 3 style prologue campaign to teach people how to play.

Just buy total warhammer 2 with no DLCs if you like that (its a much better game) then maybe buy some dlc for it on sale only DO NOT BUY THIS GAME unless you have money to burn and a top of the range pc with very good fans and you are looking for a much easier challenge than in the previous game.

Maybe you'll have better luck convincing people to by the game that's pretty much the same as this one but with less stuff and less QoL next time.

Though that being said, OP if you want to get 4 more races for this game $15 instead of buying like 2 DLCs you can go ahead and buy TWW2.

Thanks!

But did you play anything close ? Some 4X, some TBS or RTS strategy ??

So a friend of mine said that you get factions if you own the previous games and DLCs.... My brain fried to figure it out so I'll just get the bundle for the base games. Seems to be the best price for what you get...

I have played some strategy games and 4x stuff before. Nothing that I remember that has a combat like Total War though but I mean I don't mind learning if it's a good game :)

Well, it's complicated. Yes you do get all access to all the old factions and charcters/subfactions if you own the previous games and their DLCs, BUT you if you look closely on the store page you'll notice that they are selling all the old DLCs on Total War Warhammer 3's store page.

Another way to get to all the factions and subfactions is to simply buy all the DLCs as well. The only thing you'll be missing out on is the base game subfactions and characters from the previous games, though to be fair they also tend to have the most popular and iconic characters of their factions.

I'll start with the base game bundle, seem to be the best value for me. If I like the game then I can start looking into the damn maze that is DLC x)

Not a bad start, you'll get a bulk of the races that way. Though I'd still recommend The Prophet and the Warlock, just for Skaven. It has one their most popular units (Ratling Gunners) and most popular Legendary Lord (Ikkit Claw). You also get some cool Lizardmen stuff to boot.

Yes, getting the base games will allow you to try the bulk of the factions, and if you enjoy the game you can then choose DLC based on the factions that you like. The game has hundreds if not thousands of hours worth of content, so getting everything at once is not necessary.

Skaven are the faction where DLC is typically considered to be essential to the experience.
