Why no medieval mods and the likes?
Would be better than having to run on Atilla no?

Nobody has gone to the effort of making one that I know of.

A significant part of the playerbase play this game specifically because it has magic and dragons and demons etc.

Partly because what can be modded is limited by the agreement CA made with GamesWorkshop. This essentially boiled down to GW would allow modding ingame but would limit what could be allowed to be modded, so bringing external IPs and non-WHFB overhauls are a no go.

I knew about the "no competing IPs rule" but hadn't heard that there were limitations on how far an overhaul was allowed to go.

There aren't. People could absolutely mod in a medieval overhaul if they wanted to.

I've seen a roman faction mod at some point. But generally yeah, people play the game for the magic and monsters.

GW forbids it

Nah, they can't do anything against non-commercial fan made contents. This game is such a pain in the ass to mod and no one are gonna waste their time doing an overhaul is the main reason.

Implementing other IPs like LOTR, GOT, etc. is forbidden, but stuff from history might be allowed.

As long as you dont use trademarks and copy story or any visualisations how it would exactly be against IP?

How would you make a LOTR overhaul without using copyrighted material.
GW just doesn't allow you to make mods that are clearly representing other IPs that isn't Warhammer fantasy.
If you're making making "definitely not Gondor" to the point that it isn't recognizable, then you're not making a LOTR overhaul.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ companies claim that you can gain money through donations i.e. patreon which make it illegal. No modder are gonna risk it or do it completely free. Though there are plenty of LOTR mods for Medieval 2 if you are into that sort of things.
