First time i played tamurkhan i went north smacking archaon, then moving to boris up to epidemius to secure him so i could confed him later on.
Kholek's vassal took the capital but that wasn't an issue, i just moved back to reclaim it, bonking kholek's main army on the way and making a peace treaty with him.
I went full time on malakai and kislev after that, so no you are not forced to go south !
And even if you go south you could sell the ogres settlements to the chaos dwarves before rushing cathay or pursuing south to meet ku'gath (many ku'gath skill nodes gives factionwide bonus now, he is a must to confed !)
The short victory is to beat Kholek, Grimgor and the ogres. And Kholek is very aggressive, if I leave him alone, he will attack me, just like you said, if I kill Kholek then Grimgor will declare war on me and so on. I think I am forced to go south.
I think you are mistaking Tamurkhan and Festus with each other but thats a funny fluke - Don't think I ever had a campaign where hochland killed Festus by themselves.
I'm not sold on the new building system btw. We went from "nurglings, nurglings everywhere" to a "where nurglings?" feel with both the removal of the + nurgling recruited from the available plague effects, and from the green buildings. There's a tech that gives the "+ nurgling on plague spread" back to any plague spreading on friendly armies and settlements, but it takes like 20 turns to reach even if you were to rush it; so it feels really really empty at the beginning.
Tamurkhan has his special heroes and some of their special troops to recuit so you can still make it to 20 units somehow, but I can't imagine it going that way with the other two Nurgle LLs. I'll have to test them, but right now I'd say that it misses some early nurgling sources.
It's one of the most broken traits to farm in the game, it gives +3 slots to all your heroes types.
But I also quite like Nurgle to begin with so I am definitely biased.
That 37 was hotfixed and raised to 100. (5.0.2)
