(they're supposed to be the underdog)
Unless you're a Bretonnian.
My average army tends to be something like a few halberdiers, 1 or 2 greatswords and 2-3 swordsmen, then 2 gunners, 2 crossbowmen, 3 knights of whatever is the best I can get and the rest artillery. It's a good all-rounder unless you need to specialise to counter something particularly nasty.
Add whatever other units you want after that.
New engineers are great and the captains are better now. Greatswords are good for AP. Knights of the Black Rose are solid and are melee cavalry. Add a warrior priest for replenishment and a wizard and you'll find Empire can take on anyone. Best thing about the faction is the amount of choice and flexibility you have with your armies. If you want superior infantry look elsewhere.
a few spearmen with shields
a few free company
2 handgunners
2-4outriders
2-3 warmachines
1-2 heroes
and that should handle the early game,
Well this is basically the army I had clearing out the vampires in thrones of decay.
I really like the outriders, they did a lot of work for me but it does require some micro.
Also, I would grab a second lord like turn 2 to tag along to get XP, it really helps speed things up since you can alternate who takes the cities and who marches or recruits etc. Just have all the units in one army.
