Just charge forward and do human shield
pick some outriders with guns for the enemy characters (mostly their keeper of secret first, then their gatekeepers), some outriders with explosives shots for the crowds of enemies, and a very few knights of the black rose to support quickly gotrek and felix in the melee
I finished this quest with this army setup, it works well
Nevermind that they're both level 1 with bad stats, no items, and start the fight immediately in combat with an Exalted Keeper of Secrets
Personally I just the mod that lets you auto-resolve quest battles.
Of course, there is the risk of starting the mission before you are really ready for it, but that is true for all quest battles. People need to remember that you can look at the army composition of the enemies in the quest tab, read the quest narrative(what is going on and what is the goal) and consider if their army is up for such a task.
In all honestly I think the heroes are meant to stand in place and wait for the enemy to them giving you chance to put a defensive line around them, the fact they charge is likely a bug.
It used to be a generally accepted trope that this type of mission is the worst and with good reason: the NPCs programming seems to always be set to 'suicidal'
You are given enough time to push forward - I actually did the quest just for the sake of money, but I hate that duo, because dwarf. Works for Malakai, though....
I did the quest rather late with Katarin, because I thought it would be actually hard.
So I got my sled, rushed in, pulled all 3 summoners, placed the ice-cloak on Gotrek, put the anti-hero- spell-garbage on anything once the CD was up.
You can even get your missile units in for support.....the Seeker-chariot has to die!
There was actually no rush on that mission, my Tzar-guard could catch up to Gotrek and support.
But then again Tzar-guard >>> Greatswords ^^
Bear-artillery was useless, thanks to the rapid movement.....and my cavalry were winged hussars and not even the bear-ones!
It's the perfect situation for lore-of-ice or death!
But yes its a damn escort-quest with squishy npc's and those are always a tumor that needs to be removed from games. As you pointed out instead of maybe backing a bit these 2 keeps charging forward. If the player could control them, which should be the easiest thing ever to patch in, this mission would not be an issue
How to complete? Rush to their position with melee-infantry so they get cover and lay down as much damage & magic as possible on the incoming troops, thats really that.
Shield of Faith is a must. 40% ward save for Gotrex and Felix.
Use gun/cannon/luminark and eliminate keeper of secret, top priority.
Then put a luminark near Gotrex & Felix for 10%(20% if researched) ward save.
Finally use a life wizard to heal them.
Doesn't work. The issue isn't fighting the enemies. The issue is keeping Gotrek and Felix alive. Its a poorly designed quest
You go and try to solo that quest with just Elspeth on your dragon. Let me know how that works out.
