Dealing with Skin Wolves as Empire?
I have underestimated these units.

My special state troop Empire Knights with 130 armor seem to lose against them despite charging into them. Thought they could outdamage them at least because Skin Wolves only have 15 armor, but the wolves deal a bit of armor piercing and have this massive +30 bonus against large, so doesn't look like they even need AP damage.

Skin wolves are anti large, your knights are their prime targets. Maybe try halberdiers or spears ?
That or ranged attacks..

Shoot them? Single unit of outriders can kite and shoot them easily. Even basic pistoliers (that are often overlooked because no ap).

I of course easily shoot them when they come inside and attack the lines, I try to pin them in the open early with a character within range of my guns.

But what when they stay out on the flanks? Looking at the Empire roster I don't see an anti-large answer, even halberd Demis aren't going to wipe the floor with them?

Outriders would be a great skirmisher if they had 360 degree shooting but their average speed makes kiting a bit awkward.

Skinwolves are great early/mid game cav killers.
Halberds should fare decent as long as you can negate their charge, halberd demis should win but at a fairly high costs.

As has been said, shooting is youd best option. A melee hero/lord should work at stalling them as well.
Them beeing on the flanks isn't an issue, you don't need massed fire.

zealots can make the job

Great Cannons with a few Missile Strength upgrades can reliably 1-shot any Skin Wolves models it hit.
Outriders and Pistoliers can skirmish and weaken them on the flanks.

If they get in close, mass crossbows or handgunners can quickly deal a lot of damage. The Stir River Patrol state unit is particularly good, since it both deals Fire damage(extra damage vs regenerating units and reduces the effect of healing by 50%) and suppresses enemies hit(-30% speed).
Spears and Halberd infantry can deal good damage in melee.
Counter Charge with Knights of the Blazing Sun or Reiksguard.

Of those 2 you want the Blazing sun ones, they deal fire dmg and they got regenerate.

Great advice, thanks everyone.

I've handled a lot of them fairly well with focused gunfire.

Lmao, one of the Norscan armies had like 8 mammoths, that was pretty tricky but the spear line somehow held.

Powder, Faith, and Steel.

Same as everything else.

They are large but also anti-large so they ate up your cav. try halberds or spears to hold them in place and then rear charge them anti large cav or just shoot them. Use a wizard to debuff their melee attack, or a life wizard to heal your units.

Halberdiers will wreck Skin Wolves. They have a huge anti-large bonus, and being infantry the Skin Wolves do not get their own anti-large bonus. Halberdiers high Melee Def means Skin Wolves have a very low hit %, missing most attacks.

Put them on your flanks to counter flanking units like Skin Wolves or Cav, pin them and gunners will yeet & delete.
