Malakai Makaisson worth buying for what would be my first Dawi campaign?
I've wanted to play Dawi campaign for a while now, just haven't got around to it before their rework. Would I be better off playing a different Dawi LL before? Or doesn't it matter that much?

That depends really on how much you think you'll like slayer units. Personally i would advise playing a lord you already have to see if you like the faction before putting money down though.

I was in the same boat before playing Malakai recently, never touched dwarfs before. His mechanics and units make him super strong, especially because you get an ability to summon an endgame unit in his battles (it leaves after a while but with an upgrade it stays for the whole battle). A whole bunch of unit upgrades through the adventure mechanic and not much can stand up to you. The only downside I can think of is his starting position at Kraka Drak. You're kinda surrounded by enemies and need a second army quite soon to deal with that. But Malakai's a horde faction so you can use him as a mobile recruitment center with strong units fairly early on.

Also as a tip for OP if he does try out malakai, always build tool shops first, they give huge construction cost reduction, I'd say 1 oathgold trade building in the 5 tier settlement and 2 tool shops in the minor settlements.

All the dwarfs are as strong as they ever were. Hint: If you want an easy campaign, mass T2 gyrocopters. They're broken.

I think I'd recommend trying regular dwarves first; if not, you won't notice how unusual Malakai's campaign mechanics are.

Absolutely. And you can enjoy how overpowered he is. I enjoy balanced games, but I will I pay ten bucks to get "grapeshot" that deletes infantry, and the equivalent of an attack helicopter to deploy on an otherwise low tech scene?

Yes. Yes I will.

One of my best campaign.

:steamthis:

Also, him being a range LL, you might get frustrated about him (that's not your typical idea of a Dwarf)

Thanks for the answers everyone, I'll hold off on buying him for a bit and just play a base game Dawi first. You all have a wonderful day/night.

I prefer using all oath gold buildings early on and then switching them out for toolshops. Getting a rune of spite and gromgril early allows your lords to take on tier 1-3 armies out solo.
