And in both of those situations, terrain plays a huge role since the side with better terrain wins the melee grind.
This is why people don't play past turn 30 or just autoresolve to long victory, the maps don't support large battles, in fact they're barely adequate for 20 vs. 20. its a fun tactical game for the first ten turns where even if you're attacking a sheer slope map in Sylvania, Sothlands mountains, Cathay, or World's edge mountains, you can manuever to a better position.
But when everything is 20 units vs 20 units minimum, the terrain advantages are insurmountable as there's no room to surround or flank the enemy.
I use it every time I think the terrain could be relevant. It has often saved me tbh. But the elevation could be (and should be) more clearly shown on the map.
Like where a hill makes all ranged irrelevant when you are a ranged army.
Or a full 45 degree angled killbox like the one i had today lol. it was similar to the older wood elf maps. but actually worse.
Wish i took some screenshots tbh.
I don't mind being on the low ground either, if its decently laid out.
Gunpowder units get a field day.
But the types im talking about are ones that completely have no line of sight, in which no historical battle takes place, in which no right minded general would engage or position themselves in such a way. Both lore wise, immersion, strategy, logic, and design, none of it make sense lol
But I've never understood why the maps are so small other than CA feels that the players are too impatient to maneuver pre battle. Though I guess it could be a reflection of TT where the maps are limited.
