Why does Nurgle hate the Skaven?
So, from a few lore bits here and there, I keep reading that, like the title says, Nurgle actually really dislikes the Skaven.

Does any mega lore knowledge keepers know why? Especially since Skaven cause everything to wither and decay, as well as embrace plagues, such as Clan Pestilence.

Is it cause they pose competition to Nurgle or is it something else?

My understandin’ is dat yesh, teh Great Horned Rat is a competin’ disease god. Nurgle and le Rat have major beef subsequently. :lunar2020ratinablanket:

On top of dat, teh Skaven don’t feel joy when spreadin’ disease, only sadistic satisfaction. :vt2:

Plus, Nurgle is all about familial love and trust, and both are anathema to teh Skaven. :WH3_nurgling:

The Horned Rat is a lesser chaos god. Chaos gods don't get along.

Nurgle also hates Hashut, Khorne, Slaanesh and especially Tzeentch.

Nah, Nurgle actually gets along well with Khorne and Slaanesh. There is even an ingame reference to this where you get a buff in the research tree where you get bonus diplomacy with Slaaneshy and Kornate factions.

He has beef with Tzeentch though, that is true.

But I can see that the horned rat could be the cause

They tolerate each other when it's convenient for them.

But the great game is endless, all four of the gods hate each other but particularly hate their opposite. Whenever one of them gets the upper hand the other 3 gang up to bring them down.

Nurgle is a god of cyles but also stagnation - he desires to see things change but return to how they were. The Horned Rat is a god of destruction and ruin - he desires to see everything destroyed completely, unable to change or revert, just completely obliterated.

Skaven survive off Warpstone, which is produced by the Great Maw, the big Demon mouth in Cathay, summoned by the Dragon Emperor idiot to try to wipe out 2/3 of the Ogres at the price of creating a new problem.

But the Skaven don't mention the Great Maw at all. They just mention their warpstone, which comes off of the Great Maw only. And everyone that comes into the pressence of the Great Maw, loses their mind. Zhaio Ming? Thrott? Skragg? They all went crazy as if the Maw possessed them with hunger.

Warhammer lore is fun stuff.

Also, I wanna take this time to sh*t on the dwarves, dawii. "What's so sacred about them forests? We deserve a slice of that timber too, so we should take it." Is that in your book of grudges? :P

This is incorrect Warpstone existed before the great maw came into being. the meteor that made the great maw was majorly made of warpstone but warpstone was in use by skaven before the metoer hit.

It was my understanding that the Horned Rat was more-so just about the total breakdown of all things through pestilence and decay. Nurgle was more about sharing the bounties of pestilence and decay. So whilst the Horned Rat was effectively just a force of annihilation, Nurgle was a cultivator of what He perceived as beautiful and glorious blessings. Nurgle, part of the wholler elemental cycle of the Universe. The Horned Rat, arbitrary hate fueled destruction.

Simply put:

Nurgle Plagues do kill things, but only insofar as they create the basis for new life. Some Humans might die, but weird ♥♥♥♥ will grow on them and help create Nurgle's gardens

Skaven Plagues are more like nuclear radiation that spreads. It just kills everything.

Nurgle loves Life and Lifeforms, he just isn't opposed to killing in order to make more life.

Skaven Hate life, they kill for the sake of it.

They have similar methods but their goals are different and that is why Nurgle hates Skaven. Nothing to do with competition, it is purely that Skaven do not value life like Nurgle does.

There are many Lore specific things, many are mentioned in the other post.

But there is also lore wise a telling that the 8 cauldrons of a thousand poxes (the high relict which is used to create the diseases/plagues of the skaven) where originally stolen from Nurgle. 1 of the cauldrons was destroyed by Gotrek. Still the 7 Cauldron which could be from nurgle (lore wise its not clear if it was stolen from nurgle or old artefacts of the slann old ones)

I don't think any chaos god gives a ♥♥♥♥ about skaven. Even their own god.
freyland Feb 16, 2024 @ 9:39am
I can totally see Nurgle complaining about the Skaven, and then Tzeentch quips, "Rodents of unusual size? I don't think they exist."

Isn't mostly because the Horned rat is squatting somewhere in his garden?
