I would like to see banners at least split from ancillaries so they're not competing for space, though - I'm not really sure why they're the same category to begin with.
Now awarding a unit a banner is not a bad idea, you could make them buff, increase the cost to replenish, etc... almost like making a proto RoR. it would add a little flavor to the armies. As opposed to just nameless hordes of troops you do no care about.
That highlights an issue with these types of games vs. physical media types. You can story tell a battle or highlight units in a physical media campaign or battle. In these types there is no great roll-call of events or mythology you build. It is just an endless slog until you deem the campaign over. Dwarf fortress tries to give you a back story when generating a world. And some titles now kinda fill a narrative up with what you have done. But nothing makes a user created backdrop or history you can relate back to yourself with some sense of ownership.
I would go into more depth but this rambled a little, because I am old and crusty, so I apologize for that and for hijacking this post.
Overall there needs to be better customization, if you equip a banner ancillary on your LL, you should actually see it being carried by one of the units.
