They're pretty OP, hard to lose with as long as you unify the forest you're GOLD.
They are hard by TW standards to play as in battle, but VERY fun.
I personally enjoyed them more in the last game where you could go full eco-terrorist and return the world to nature but playing nice with at least one neighbor around your tree settlements seems to be the META ATM.
Assuming you already know how the magical trees and their rituals work - the most important advice is probably this:
> Raze all cities from everyone in your way. You need the gold.
Taking the Hearthland regions is fine, perhaps also the occasional outpost for global recruitment and fast replenish. Everything else needs to be razed, this is the intended primary source of income for Wood Elves.
Also:
> If playing as Talsyn, Argwylon, or Heralds of Ariel:
Upgrade Yn Edri Eternos (Oak of Ages) immediately. Repeat until T5.
This unlocks the confederation missions.
Treekin and treemen are awesome.
No they don't. They can be quite squishy, but they don't suck. The problem with playing melee-orientated with the wood elves is that you'll take more casualties than playing with missile units (where only the front line will usually take damage) and after razing a settlement, you won't get replenished the same turn (unless you're Nestra and Arahan).
Remember, this isn't WH2. The melee buffs for the ai were reduced and it is noticable. Melee armies are fine in WH3, even Wood Elves. Especially Bladesingers do tons of damage in a short time. Combine that with vanguard deployment (Glade Captain skill) and stalk (Glamourweaver skill) and the enemy's army is gone within seconds, even more so with ambushes.
I played durthu with only forrest creatures for roleplay and it went better than I hoped it would be.
DURTHU SMASH!
