Don't forget the 4 Beastmen factions (aka "the children of chaos" as they call themselves), the 2 Norsca factions, the 3 Chaos Dwarfs factions and 6 Skaven factions (Yes Skaven is a confirmed Chaos faction in the newer lore). Oh and your mother Morathi and the cult of pleasure (also a Chaos faction surely).
The fight against chaos has always been the main dish of the setting.
My biggest objection to them now is, they don't seem as fun as the old school horde faction was AND they push some of the other factions, MAJOR factions, off to the side, so you end up with a map where they are a local attraction but not the unified in purpose, world ending faction that they were in WH1. Basically "Rebels" , not all that interesting to interact with.
There is much that doesn't feel "right" with WH3. Malekith being turned into a chump that gets rolled early on, in every game, is one of them. Archeon the Everchosen hammering out...trade treaties is another one. Belegar outperforming other Dwarf factions without ever holding 8 Peaks, every game, is another one. Tilea and Estalia being rolled in the first 10 turns, every game, is another.
Ruined by bad strategic placement - Valkia has low quality territory, making her relatively unprofitable to fight, but letting her take Ghrond and likely Har Ganeth is unacceptable. Grombrindal is expensive to appease, but would otherwise backstab you while you are busy handling Valkia. Once you defeat Valkia and defeat/ally Grom, you are set for a decent mid-late game.
Other DE factions start in more favorable conditions, some of them with better faction effects. I'd rate Lokhir and Morathi as best DE campaigns overall.
Diversity? MORE Warrior of Chaos spam is diversity to you? There are 8 Warrior of Chaos factions , ALL with their own Legendary lords. Losing the leader of a major faction( Dark Elves), MOST games, early on, says there is a baqlance issue. Dark elves get rolled across the board pretty early (before turn 100) in most games.
Challenge? Clearly not for Valkia or Grombrindal! Who are both able to roll over Malekith early with little effort. IF you want a challenge you turn the difficulty UP and/or pick a minor faction.
I do NOT play one faction, I do NOT have an attachment for any one faction. The last 5 games I have played have been Thorgrim, Zatan the Black, Ikit Klaw, Count Noculous and then Malekith most recently.
IF your response is "git gud" then I am afraid you have missed the point of the post. This was never "OH my favorite LL/race has a bad start, I can't steam roll legendary...boo-ho" it was always "Iconic LL and cool races are being choked out every game by the stupid amount of Warrior of Chaos factions and NEW factions for core races. AS stated Valkia and Grombrindal start real close AND they can beat Malekith 1v1 and they have a better army, meaning that the Dark Elves don't survive very long in MOST games when played by the AI. This points to a severe balance issue as the AI vs AI the same result happens MOST times.
Malekith getting rolled over and over again, played BY the AI against the AI, along with all the other Dark Elf factions ought to be considered an "issue".
Whats your sample size?
Because a reliable sample size for statistics like these are in the thousands and i sincerely doubt anyone have played even a hundred games and recorded how the dark elves manage in each of them.
Confirmation bias is a thing, you need hard data to determine stuff like this for sure.
