You only really need to worry about temps if it starts getting to 90c
Also what makes You believe it would reach 85c in summer? The difference between winter and summer on my 6700XT is maybe like 1-2c at worst and the difference between summer and winter temps in my region can be as big as 40c.
Do you live in a place where it is -30c in the winter and +40c in the summer or something? Some Nvidia cards like the 3080 are technically ok until like 88c. Don't worry.
So I guess I'll just have to get used to hear the fans noise if I want to enjoy a smoother picture.
Knock a few settings down if you want it cooler still. (Aka decrease the GPU load)
It's working at max just to give you 110-120 out of your 144.
I personally cap my FPS @55 and literally take the side of my case off to maximize airflow if I plan to play more than an hour.
Instead, what I do is run MSI afterburner and decrease the power limit of my card a bit, so it draws a bit less power, and at the same time increase the memory clock, so it still produces the high fps I need.
Essentially, I undervolt + overclock my card. I think it's a better way. I get my high fps and keep my card cool.
I have a 3060ti btw.
Oddly enough the outcome and temps etc are much the same running on both a 5600X/3070/16Gb 3200MHz PC (with the same case and cooling) at ultra/high at 3440x1440 and 1440p... and a 6800H/3070ti/16Gb 4800Mhz laptop at ultra/high 1440p. The big difference for these is, of course, the fps and for the laptop it's form factor and the limits of 8Gb VRAM.
Your experience re temps/usage vs outcome is overall somewhere between the two points and neither on average surprising nor bad tbh. In terms of outright perf the 4070ti can very easily take a 5-10% lead over the 6800XT, as demonstrated by your 100-120 fps. Though dropping your GPU usage below 100% will eat into that. I'd suggest further tweaking re cooling/settings etc to suit but anything into the 80's temps-wise is still well within the limits given the specs, even if unsettling for you. They can take it and you'll be alright... though I'll add again otoh, this kind of game/genre doesn't absolutely need high fps unlike shooters and mp games etc (I used to play WH2 by necessity at 30-45 fps before I had the above specs and it was fine)

Why lock it on 60 frames?? Your card is a beast. Enjoy the F out of it.
I lock the game at 60 because I can't have even stable 120, and the game forces me to use it either in fullscreen or to crop part of the screen, because there's no borderless windowed.
100% gpu use is ok for short time frames. If your constantly running at 100% and using your computer and your using it all the time.
THE LIFESPAN OF THE GPU WILL BE LIMITED. The transistors and such will eventually fail due to heat. Also your other components will be also exposed to excess heat , unless you have a crazy cooling setup in your case, other parts might start failing.
If you have deep pockets and don't care how long some of your hardware will last give er ♥♥♥♥. If you want to increase the lifespan of that said equipment turn it down.
For this kinda game anything over 60 frames is really unnecessary. This is not a fps game , the optimization for this game is pretty bad.
Its your choice really, longer lifespan for your hardware or not it up to the preference of the user.
I am human not a hawk or eagle that can actually only see around 90 hz.... 144 hz does a great job at making it smooth . Reality is humans can't really see more then 90 frames a second. The reason more hz is better for fps is the way the games are coded, with latency in mind. More screens per second on some fps means your bullet travels faster or quicker.
The choice is yours, ask yourself this though . Can you notice the difference at all after 60 fps ? If not then set to max 60 , otherwise there is no point. Unless you find the sound of your fans in max rotation is a calming effect on you.
I can see the difference between 120 fps and 60 fps, even without looking at a fps counter. Damn, I even see the difference scrolling the mouse cursor on windows desktop. I used 60 Hz monitors for gaming for the past 30 years or so. Switching to 144 Hz last summer was eye opening and mind blowing.
But, what do you mean by shorter lifespan? GPU will break in 5 years instead of 10? This whole PC will be obsolete in 5 years, anyway.
