Silverin Guard
Chosen (alabard) (warriors of chaos)
Fenix Guard (high elves)
Temple Guards (lizardmen)
*missread u question. Im not used to hold lines
It's the Chosen of Slaanesh with Hellscourges.
In the defensive game, they beat the socks off even Silverin Guard, which, to be fair, are really strong (although more cost effective than strong).
Aurelio mentions the chosen with Halberds of tzeentch. They are okay, but their lack of missile parry, and 14 less melee defence, really hurts in the intended role. Same with Black Guard and Executioners, except even less defence. They can kill though - bonus.
Honorary mention to Celestial Dragon Guard. With harmony and formation, they can compete with most on the list but the main reason for mentioning them is that Cathay has really good ranged options.
If you want to think outside the (wooden) box, tree kin are worth a look. They are tanky AF and has charge defence. Bladesingers, with shadow coil, has the second best melee defence (that I know of) with 67, and 20 phys res. No armor, no missile parry, and no charge defence disqualilfies them from the centerline though. (But their versatility is unsurpassed in switching between offence, defence, and AP/Base damage.).

Third honorary mention to depth guard. They are the unit I'd like to be good, but isn't. Halberds with regen and good armor/defence, though? They would be gold if they weren't half sized units.
Depth guards are perfect how they are. Kindda glass canons against others high tiers units and absolute slaughterers against low/middle tiers enemies.
Any more buff would make them too insane especially for the Vcoast faction who have other great assets
That's halberd, not spear. xd
>_>
Halberds are the AP variant of spears and you know it.
Drycha has a tech that gives tree spirits Poison and Deathblow, and another that gives treemen Murder of Spites. Don't forget the Oak or Willow aspects for even more armor or missile resist.
Otherwise look smaller since, except for body-blocking cavalry, Wardancers (Spears) perform better than Tree Kin.
