Total War: WARHAMMER III

New Warhammer Player, worth buying on sale?
I haven’t played a total war game since medieval 2, and I mostly prefer historical titles. However I won’t lie, the game looks good and ima sucker for factions like high elves and chaos. I am aware of the predatory practices surrounding the dlcs, but if it goes on sale would it be worth picking up? Looking for all thoughts and opinions!

I would recommend that you purchase TWW2 on sale, first. The gameplay has better polish, less bugs (though still some present) and is overall a better quality product than game 3 (at least as of writing this.)

I'd avoid TWW1 as it lacks a lot of quality of life choices that have been added in game 2 and it's DLCs, such as recruitable basic units that don't need a recruitment building. You also mentioned that you like high elves and chaos - High elves sadly arn't playable until game 2, and Warriors of Chaos on the campaign map tends to become boring quite quickly (imo).

Game 3 will be a bit hit and miss. I love game 3's further QoL improvements such as being able to move in Ambush and Encamp stance, the rework to Warriors of Chaos, and the addition of new factions such as the monogods, Kislev and Ogre Kingdoms. But it's also lacking a lot of polish, often feels 'clunky' and poorly optimised in comparison to the 'smoother' feel of game 2.

The above reasoning is why I'd recommend you play game 2 first. Game 2 will give you a good idea of if this is something you'd enjoy a great deal and want to add more to, and if you find yourself loving what game 2 has to offer, you might be compelled to try game 3. Just bear in mind game 3 is still a work in progress.

It's actually not predatory at all, minus the recent questionable price hikes for the latest DLC. You get all the content of every DLC in your game. You only need to purchase the factions you want to play as. The other DLC factions will be in your game as opponents. It's definitely worth purchasing on sale.

The Total War evolved a lot since Medieval 2,
You will meet the province system with building slots, diplomacy without agents, and especially RPG elements in Warhammer trilogy (with single unit heroes)

It is definitely worth to pick up, I would suggest to try Warhammer 1, if it is Your "cup of tea"
Warhammer 1 (WH1) is cheapest in sale, has "classic" starter factions - Humans, Orcs, Undead, Dwarfs + Chaos Warriors and Wood Elves in DLC. The Game itself aged very well, multiplle things and factions were later re-worked in WH2 & WH3 (Chaos Wariors, Wood Elves, Dwarfs can forge items in WH2 etc). but it does not mean, that WH1 works bad, the gameplay itself is fine , just some factions are more complex in later games, and that makes it pefect to start

If You want High Elves, they are main race in WH2

People do drama from it

all DLCs add meaningful content to the game and extend it, but is clearly optional - in different words - You do not need any DLCs, the base game(s) itself is fine without DLCs, so You can ignore DLCs

Gameplaywise med 2 is still superior to this game as it is actually a good tw game. TW:W is just a good warhammer game, probably the only one there is which is somewhat decent. However the game never lived up to the promises made by CA, i am talking about part 3 here. At some point most of the community had enough from the excuses and the lackluster handling of it.

At the end of the day, you do the same over and over again and the battles are even worse then in med2. Annoying bugs that have been around for a very longtime such as pathfinding issues etc..

On sale pick up a basegame and see whether you like it, the DLCs add some flavour to it but that is it there are no gameplay improvements or anything of the sort. Get the biggest discount available, try diffrent sellers. 20€ not a cent more.

I think the Realms campaign was a lot of fun the first time out, the prologue reminded me of how well Warcraft rts games did narrative. It has been changed a lot, a little too easy for me.

And the final battle you may want to see if there is a mod making it more fun a challenge.(Like even a mod that just buffs final boss to have more levels or match player lord's level might be worth it.) But it's fun the first time even as is.

I've been playing mostly Immortal Empires campaign and I miss exploring the Realms.

Absolutely.

I would say that content wise Warhammer is at its best with this game.

It’s worth it. Don’t let the people that have 3000 hours per game say it’s not. It has some bugs here and there but they aren’t game breaking.

I kinda wish I was you right now as I jumped in midway through warhammer 2 and it gave me tons of time without having to look forward to the next dlc since I had so much content already.

My opinion-get it and enjoy each legendary lord.

It's been the most fun and long-lived game (series) in my library. Other games come and go, but total warhammer remains.
dingbat Dec 12, 2023 @ 5:58am
it's a great game. ignore the idiot who told you to get game 1
Kaneda Dec 12, 2023 @ 6:04am
I suggest you to wait until next summer sale. Why ? The game is in a state where we dont know what the future brings. There was an big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and CA has a bad time now. It looks like trhey are on course now again, but they have to proof now their good will. There are still many bugs in there and each bugfix patch can add some more.

No.

CA been neglecting tf out of WH3 for over a year and the only way to show them they need to smarten up is with our wallets.

At this point when it comes to basic gameplay it's still vastly inferior to TW: 3 Kingdoms- and it may never surpass it because of how WH3's built, (massive pile of jank.)
halogamb Dec 12, 2023 @ 6:16am
More than worth it. DLC isn't predatory as it isn't required to enjoy the game. You buy what you want to play, when you want to. There are also frequent sales.
