Currently using ladders is at best annyoing as attacker, unless you're fine with all your units attempting to use ladders if you don't send them one by one.
As is, the straight to exhausted debuff from climbing a ladder and the pathfinding part means i barly ever use ladders.
Don't like the free ladders, find a mod or code it for yourself that removes the ladder abilitiy.
They would create siege weapons and of course ladders, the distance between where you want your sieges weapon built and the closest settlement would determine how long it take to build and of course the amount of builder you have at your disposal would have an impact on that too.
The amount of builders could be determined by existing resources in game like gold, silver, wood.
Settlements need better walls and less towers, but they need towers that actually do something, it is warhammer, why am i stuck with wood towers shooting basic arrows... Bretonnia is so good at making towers that everyone is copying them.
Or the fact if you're going to wait you might as well just build siege tower things very fun to sit around for turns making ladders when after my units climb them they'll just be exhausted and fight worse who doesn't love that
And sitting around for end turn is so fun and engaging
Maybe you should help out your fellow AI brethren
Only Light Troops should have ladders (e.g. witch elves, rangers, marauders etc.) thus making those units useful in any army setup. The Heavy Troops (such as greatswords, chosen, graveguard) should only climb siege towers.
A special icon should be placed in every unit indicating if they can climb ladders.
and slowing down the campaign map walking over towns by a turn to build ladders can only do good
That's exactly the reason why every flipping legendary lord gained the siege attacker trait. So people that didn't have cannons or monsters could just start a siege instantly.
Because waiting a turn for siege equipment before you can start has never been fun.
why play grand strategy if waiting a single turn is too much to ask
maybe subway surfers more what your looking for
no planning or thinking needed for that
