How to deal with Chaos Dwarf's Dreadquake Mortar?
I am playing an immortal empire campaign with the High Elves (Alarielle) and having a difficult time to deal with the Dreadquake Mortar of the Chaos Dwarfs. In fact, fighting a Chaos Dwarf army with this unit stands out so much in difficulty compared to any other faction that I would say it is OP. This thing whipes out several units before I can get even close to it and when there are 2 or 3 of them in the enemy army it is getting really ugly. My best defense so far is to use 2 Star Dragons to fly over and deal with them asap, but that's easier said than done.
Any tips on how to counter the Deadquake Mortar a) with the High Elves and b) in general?

Thanks!

That mortar is one severely overpowered piece of artillery. However, AI isn't very good at protecting their artillery. Your dragons are one way to get the job done... another is cavalry. You could try and flank their artillery with a couple units of dragon princes, as well. Preferably while keeping your main army out of range of its overpowered projectiles.

If you want to play as a different high elf legendary lord, Eltharion has access to a flying cavalry unit called Knights of Tor Gavel. They can also get the job done.

Chaos dwarves feel somewhat overtuned imo.

Dreadquake mortars deal too much damage for something that also has a huge aoe snare.

Avoid going infantry heavy and do not engage at range for any reason - the mortar must be meleed asap so it stops firing.

Keep your main army on the move until the mortars stop firing and focus fire them with armor piercing once they are pinned down.

Like others said try to have the upper hand on the campaign map so you can auto resolve.

Yep, as others noted AI is terrible at protecting artillery from fast units, preferably single entities (heroes, dragons, etc).

Any scenario where it gets to shoot at your infantry will cost you too much.

Bait with single entity hero/general then dismantle with fast movers.

You could try ambushing the army and shut it down before it can fire?

That or keep most of your army back out of range and run a unit of cav back and forth to exhaust it's ammo

Any low model count entity.
It insanely powerful against any high modelcount units. Cav can dodge, but most likely get wrecked if hit, the sloweffect can allows for easy picking if they're already in range of their fireglaives/blunderbusses. Regular sized inf will get slaughtered if hit.

So HE means mostly flyers, lords, heroes, chariots and kittens. Arty will take way too long to try.

I found that they will target dragons, but are terrible at actually hitting them, so if you have it in you to spend a few minutes wasting their ammo by going back and forth or in a circle, you can effectively neutralize them with next to no effort.

Same way you deal with any powerful arty. Hide infantry in forest, send flyers or fast cav to take it out once their army moves on you, use heroes and single entities.

If AI holds back draw out the shots with a SE, they hardly do any damage on the single models..

If you bring a bolt thrower or two, the AI generally starts moving towards you from the start and away from their artillery.
You can also send something like an eagle straight at it from the start, just to tie it down for long enough to get your units in range/melee. Sisters of Avalorn tend to melt artillery they can hit pretty quickly.

Eagles also work (better yet, a hero on a eagle)

Thank you all! Appreciate all your comments.
Auto-Resolve usually causes the loss of a few units, which kinda hurts. Especially if the unit is already at a high rank. My end game army consists of 6x phoenix guard, 10 SOA, 2 dragons and 1 handmaiden. Do you see room for improvement?
It is not easy to keep units out of range. Some maps are just too small. But thanks for reminding me to use forests to hide my units.
I tryed flying around with dragons to exhaust their ammo, but even though the dragons barely take any damage, the mortars start targeting something else after a few shots. And it takes a whole lot of time to completely exhaust their ammo.

Unless the lord is archmage, where are your mages?

A mage is a must have for any faction that can.
