typical melee infantry units can't get enough of their models into melee with vlad to overcome his regeneration, and will block your own ranged units' line of sight. Ideally you kill vlad from a distance, but when that isn't an option you want to keep your high model count (60-100) melee units away from him and fight him with low model count monstrous infantry (24 or fewer), or single entities.
beyond that, it sort of depends on what units you have available. What faction were you playing as?
Vlad and Isabella are essentially invincible unless you have a ton of handgunners. If you don't have handgunners yet, the only way to beat them is to use auto-resolve. Absolutely broken legendary lord-hero pair with their insane armor, damage resistance, and regeneration.
Also, when you do beat Vlad, he respawns the very next turn. Yes, the very next turn.
- Order of priority kill Isabela and the other heroes then kill Vlad. Isabella and any vampire lore hero (vampires and necromancers) can heal, Vlad is tough better fighter and more regenerating as it is when he gets his sword and then he has a ring a little bit latter that gives him a usable boon of tons of ward save, remove the easy ones first, keep Vlad busy meanwhile with some expendable units or someone that can take a beating, anyway it wont take you long to down the vampire heroes if you focus on them.
- Have something that deals fire damage, it halves any regen.
- Vampires have quite some armor, have it in mind and attack them with that. Guns are the easy go to to dealing tons of damage and armor penetrating one.
- Vlad is a on foot human size/mass unit, he doesn`t get a mount ever. Large units can play ping pong with him throwing him around, from the charge of a humble horse. Early arch-nemesis of Vlad from his neighbours are the malevolant trees, they can 1v1 him with just right clicking him... and then pretty much any large unit with big enough charge+damage with a lot of micro, just keep charging don`t let him throw a single blow at you.
It is not a hard enemy, it`s a gimmic one. When you read the equipments and on combat the boons, you figure it out, and it is a pretty safe enemy.
If you just ctrl+a and right click on him, he is absolutely gonna destroy you lol
get him to engage with a lord/hero, then set up a line of handguns/other ranged units and focus fire
Failing that use ranged units to kill them or at least do as much damage as you can. Destroy the rest of their army first, then separate them by kiting and kill Isabella before Vlad. Magic spells that deal direct damage work well for this as well, and projectile spells can help too but they might miss a lot. You want the vampires out of melee so they can't heal.
If you can't kill them outright with ranged, you will need to finish them off with high burst damage melee. Low entity units like lords, heroes, monsters, etc. Vlad heals by fighting so you want to make this quick. Cycle charge and reset.
Failing that you need to grind your way through his ridiculously high regen cap. I've done it, but in most cases your army will break before he does.
Then you immobilize the target a short distance in front of your army and focus fire with every ranged unit.
If you can get a Light wizard, their Net spell can hold a target in place for a couple volleys worth.
There's also a handgunner Regiment of Renown that get's magic ammo which can bypass any physical resistance Vlad gets (I don't remember how much he has, but I'm guessing it's more than 0%).
If this is early-game, yeah, handgunners.
If it's later on, options expand a bit more. Demigryphs cycle-charging... hero spam... a lot more options.
Everyone is assuming this is playing as Empire because their melee units are largely under-powered. Greatswords are better, but if surrounding with swordsmen or spears or flagellants, yeah, the damage per second you get will be very low because many models won't get into contact due to being blocked out, and those that do have such meager stats that the damage they inflict is infrequent.
But it's possible the OP isn't even Empire, I guess.
Yeah, my experience with this problem is with Skarsnik, and let me tell you gobbos vs that duo isn't a fun match up either.
But it really depends at which point of the game are you.
Generally, try to focus on getting building at 5, and don't fear to use some low tier units (tier 1-3), too.
I also had problems with the Empire Vampires and sometimes with the Black Rose ones, but actually had more issues VS dwarves when they all rise up and attack you with 5-6 armies clumped up together, haha.
