Agreed though there are some exceptions when it comes to the Lords trait. Ie. Noble for Franz in Reikland as a defensive lord
Usually without
With say Grimgor or Lockhir you can recruit early 3 or 4 armies, Whaagh them if GS, or put them on an Ark for DE, and send them pillaging all over, they'll earn you way more than their upkeep, as GS and DE have super high loot/sack revenues
With more defensive factions with way worse loot (Empire, Dwarfs, Chorfs,..) you'd better have enough positive income to sustain them, as you won't get much loot from battles and sacking...
I did notice the AI watches your army strength level or something because usually I don't get wiped that fast when I have 2 armies. I'm gonna have to find a better balance...
For certain factions, Thorgrim amongst them (Karl too), you HAVE TO recruit asap a second army (on turn 2 !) and manage a negative income in order to overcome early game wars.
As Thorgrim head straight to Skarsnik (east then north)
Second Lord can reinforce and has to do recruiting when main army is in enemy territory
What difficulty are you playing on?
