Note though that the game isn't an RTS with base building or unit recruitment in battle. You select armies, and fight a battle between those armies. There's no economic/development aspect on the battle side, that's entirely on the campaign side.
In general, the game is VERY supportive of playing vs. AI, in fact, that's the primary way to play the game.
Also, campaign play is a civilization/rts hybrid, in that you play your faction on the campaign map, create armies and move them around, and if they meet enemy armies, THEN you have the RTS battle to decide which army wins (with what surviving). It's that combination which Total War does uniquely well.
that's good advice.
I still hope one day there will be new RTS game like Red Alert 3 with no limit structure and infantry.
