Many units play somewhat similar roles to the TT, but then again it's first and foremost a Total War game that follows the unit counter system of Total War that's not present in TT. The biggest difference there being spears/halberd type units countering cavalry/monsters in Total War. That's not really a thing in TT.
The tabletop game can take 5+ hours to play, not counting all the prep work beforehand. It's also prohibitively expensive to some people. It's not something you pick up on a whim and play the same week you start collecting. It can take months or years to get a sizeable fully painted army.
Total Warhammer is much more accessible, but doesn't exactly scratch the same itch as the hobby that is tabletop Warhammer.
And sure a few of us paint our models. But just for that... color.
There is nothing in the rule books that say's you are forced to paint your models before play.
Glue them together and throw them on the board. takes maybe 1 hour at the most to setup up a box of 100 mini's.
Not quite tabletop scale, but it's trying really hard to get there.
Table top is ever changing, new units. rule books. Always another model to paint.
With this game you buy it, and thats it your done.
Over the 10 years i played table top, i could of bought a new 2023 mustang gt.
It is also the best representation of this world in game form, imo.
They only have limited games in Fantasy battle that try to be a tabletop-ish. Mordheim is one, but it is the skirmish 5 v 5 type.
There are several 40k games that touch on being the tabletop.
A popular one right now, that has a smooth turn based feel is 40k battlesector.
if you want Fantasy battle in game form, nothing beats WH3. Reviews are only negative for a recent issue, but the game can be considered complete content wise and there is plenty to add through the previous games DLC.
