Alt-movement is also pretty darn awkward and overly time-consuming.I don't see why the default shouldn't be to preserve formations with a single click.
You can pause if it takes you too much time to move your units.
This honestly sounds like a you problem. It's never bothered me with how it currently is, and going off the other replies, it seems to be the same case for them, too.
It's simply suboptimal because when I hardlock a group I have to either include my characters and then I can't access their spells and abilities until I click on them again or I make them separate groups but then they won't move at the same speed of the rest of the group and I have to waste extra clicks. It's just clunky.
When I arrange my troops like this
M--M--M Melee
S---S---S Skirmisher
----L---- Lord
and give a simple right-click order they arrange like this at the target destination:
L--M--M--S--S--M--S
Why would I ever want my troops to do this? Why is this the default? Keeping the formation should be the default. There's no reason at all to make control that awkward and unwieldy.
And no, it doesn't matter that people here managed to accomodate to this. I have too, y'know. I just don't see why this should be required at all. This is simple QoL.
