checkerboard formation

I try to setup a checkboard formation by alternating my melee and ranged but when i do that useing cnrl left lick and try to drag them out inn a line the game puts my melee infront and ranged at the back. Why?

I want them both to go on the same line and then i can drag the ranged back to make the checkerboard what am i donig wrong ?

I learned yesterday that you have to disable "default drag formation" in the options

Click-drag a box over the entire formation.

Hold Alt (left Alt) and then you can move them forward/backward in that formation.

Holding Ctrl will allow you to pivot left/right

Thanks thats helpful i wish the tutorial was better and i didnt have to look this up on the internet.
