Nope if you choose a good target for your chariots they shouldn't be stuck in melee. You are supposed, like Ashardalon said, give an attack order then when they are in contact give a move order to pull them out of the melee. If they are stuck that's because you tried to charge trough a deep formation or high mass units (cavalry, monstrous infantry), or it's a mod problem. So it's not clunky, chariots are units that need a deeper comprehension of the system.
For SIM they are not supposed to be played like chariots. They charge and they wreck havoc. Some a great against infantry, some against large. You can also use "concentration of force" tactic where you use your SIM to charge trough your own after your frontline is in melee.

Either my english is that bad, or you just misunderstood me. I know how chariots work, I know about giving move order. I'm saying that N'kari for example, don't charge THROUGH, he stops right in front of a unit and slams his sword into the ground. I'm not even talking about blob situation. With chariot - I can give attack order and it will charge through, yeah, if I will not give move order it will stuck after initial charge, but that's not my point. What I am trying to say - big single entity monsters charge is devastating only if you have 2 (or more) units staying close to each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzw0D48LzTQ just watch.
