-In a vacuum I think Fire has some of the best pure damage spells but the most efficient ones can be hard to target.
-Shadows is one of my personal favorites as it is useful even if your front line is engaged due to reliable targeting
-Life is still great, especially if you plan to tank with lords/heroes/SEMs, the initial spell is good for popping lightly armored units while triggering your passive, and dwellers still puts out great damage but is probably due for a nerf
-Heavens can also be good as the comet can bring serrious pain but you need to make sure you are targeting mutiple units and they are pinned in place as the wind up makes it easily dodged otherwise.
Side note on HE casters. Caster lords of all lores can have dragon mount. Caster HERO only fire mage gets dragon mount. So my typical strat is life mage lord with fire mage hero in every stack that isn't led by a LL. That gives you 2 dragons that can cover life and fire lores. Pretty spiffy.
I completly forgott about that. Great tip and I will try that.
Personally I prefer lore of shadows if I want to focus on damage spells. You get a decent single target spell that also slows down a unit, good for helping kill lords and heroes. You get the Pendulum which works great against lines of infantry and missile units. And you get a reliable vortex spell for clumps of infantry. And on top of that you get some good utility spells too. Very versitile magic lore with good damage spells.
Which lore is the best against heavily armored chaos warriors? Fire is very disappointing against them.
Just some pointers with fire vs chaos. Burning head has no AP, so you will for sure be disappointed by it. Piercing bolts is 100% AP damage, so its your go to vs blobbed up chaos warriors. Also, flaming sword of rhuin is deceptive. It works on ranged as well as melee, and buffs everyone with flaming attacks (stops regen), magical attacks (bypass deamon phys res) and 30% increased base melee and ranged damage, for a whole minute when overcast to everyone in a 35 m AOE. It shouldn't be overlooked.
Not preaching fire as the best lore. But, it's the only lore that gives the caster hero a dragon, so it's worth learning how to use it efficiently.
-If you have melee infantry, especially anything with decent AP, Mindrazor and flaming sword are both excellent spells. Good damage buff and magic attacks bypass any phys resist, Obviously tailor to what you are fighting.
-Piecing bolts and Pit of Shades are both great against blobbed or valuable engaged armored targets.
-Dwellers is also good AP damage and the heals from life can be great for utility and sustain.
Sadly I have basically no units with AP. I'm only having access to middle tier units and I think none of them have AP damage.
It's so bad even 2 full armies lost in auto resolve against Valkia. I won manually after killing Valkia with some rented Dragons luckily.
Vlad, Throgg or other characters with lots of healing giving you a rough time? Cast Flaming Sword to give your guys fiery attacks. Fighting Dwarfs, Chaos Warriors or other heavy armored forces? Cast Cascading Fire Cloak.
I noticed that shadow mage heroes have barriers. Are they the only ones?
Dwellers Below is a strong stationary vortex spell which also deals direct damage within the circle as well. It's one of the highest damage spells in the game and using earth blood/regrowth for healing single entities is arguably the most efficient use of magic in the game.
The shadow mage hero does not come with that as a standard feature. Barrier comes from the protected trait, which gives 20 missile res, 20 spell res, and 600 barrier. And any lore can spawn with protected trait. I look for that, or incendiary for the +75 charge and +75% weapon str.
