can's summon unit using guardian call
everywhere I point it just says "invalid target. valid targets: ground" when I'm pointing it on the ground within range of the caster. This doesn't happen all the time, but when it happens...the ability basic is useless for the whole match.

Clearly something is wrong with your targeting.

You created a thread about spells and not being able to control their angles and now this.

Try reverting your options back to default and make sure your mouse isn't defect.

Sounds like the kind of thing that can happen from corrupt files or mod conflicts / out of date. Normally that warning is for targeting a wall with a ground spell or targeting past a wall with a spell that requires controlled territory (such as summoning spells).

Have you been using Alt+Tab during battles? This can mess up controls a bit(since Alt is used as a combat command). It makes drawing up units and targeting with abilities next to impossible.(it can be fixed by pressing Alt again).

Same issue here, though with the spell Raise Dead. None of the suggestions above fix it. I just reinstalled Windows and this still happens. It usually occurs in sieges. Probably tens of times for for me, in total. I think I've had it happen in a couple of field battles as well. This bug costs me a lot of time. Because often I do not need the summoning spell until mid-late stages of a battle. Forcing me to restart the battle.

Sounds like an old bug I noticed some time ago in Warhammer 3.

It happens in sieges. Most likely because you are not supposed to be able to summon units behind enemy walls.

Once the walls are broken you SHOULD be able to summon anywhere but the bug prevents it everywhere.

One workaround is you should be able to cast the summon spell by casting it on one of your unit cards. On the unit card itself on the bottom of the screen! Weird but hey... Why fix Bugs.

Summoning on the unit card worked as you say. I did not know that, so thanks. Though much of the tactical advantage of summoning a unit is lost when having to place it on another existing unit.

I have this bug as well but with the skaven summoning spells. Menace Below works fine as that is never restricted but when I break through the walls my summoning spells aren't working and that's when I need them most to get my ratling gunners through and positioned and nothing helps with that than a wall meatshields.

Which map, or what's the wall/gate layout relative to your deployment zones? I know Bretonnia and Dwarfs/Orcs have separate-zone siege maps this can occur on.
If the map has separated deployment zones, did you move your units out of their original zone?

Because:

It's using your original deployment zone as the "source" (instead of the unit doing the summoning) to see if you've opened the wall/gate. Keep an eye on the position of your faction shield on the battle loading screen to see which segments you have to open to get non-global summons.

Commenting because I found this thread from a google search trying to understand why I couldn't cast animate dead in a siege map even after taking the walls. This is what solved it for me. It was on a Bretonnian siege map (Couronne) with distinct deployment zones and I broke through in an alternate zone. I replayed the battle and was able to cast raise dead once taking the main gate in the original deployment zone.
