Personally I like to stick to Yellow and use Red as my filler (barring the boost to campaign movement, that’s a must). But that’s how I have my fun.
At lvl 14 I'll fill in the special personal skills a legendary lord has.
Then I fill in the red tree line. (I always get the +75 exp per turn at lvl 2) Buffing up the army unit's you intend to use is a far bigger power amplifier then a single +7 armour on your lord.
No, I hardly if ever pick mage lords as my starting LL, I dislike using pure mages as a general. I use a hero for casting.
Personally I would put points into her healing spells and the rest into melee, and obviously grabbing her unique skills when available.
The reason is I prefer her in dragon form for her mobility and melee power. Most of her spells I don't find very useful, so I usually put an alchemist in the army as a dedicated mage.
You can effectively destroy 4 armys at once. More if you get lucky on the post battle capture's for unit replenish.
