Something doesn't need to be confirmed for people to speculate. In fact, not being confirmed is one of the requirements to "think" something will be a certain way. After confirmation you "know" what it is so there's no need to speculate anymore.

Monkey king vs Changeling has been hinted at since before the game even released. Plus the monkey king is stupidly popular in China. Personally I'm not a fan, never have been, so I'm glad it's somebody else, but a lot of people would've been more than happy to pay for monkey king DLC so CA making that makes sense from a business perspective (I fully expect it's still going to happen, just at a later date now).

I'm guessing based on the quotes included in the game loading screens which imply that much of Monkey King's bad rep is a set up by the forces of Tzeentch, so people assumed yhe would be the next big clord when the Cathay/Kislev/Tzeentch dlc was announced. Also that, of the few big names that existed prior to all the Cathay lore drops that occurred, MK was one of them.

Because one would presume a monkey would be a big seller than a samey cathy man with Dragon.

An interview with Andy Hall where he set up the rivalry between the Monkey King and The Changeling; the only known character v character rivalry mentioned in all of the new lore for Cathay, and a rivalry that also aligns with the Cathay vs Tzeentch rivalry.

On-top of that the two in-game loading screen prompts referencing this rivalry; like the Changeling taking different forms to misrepresent the Monkey King across Cathay. Was the strongest possible guess for who the Lord would be, and I think CA or GW chickened out of doing him first and instead went for a "safe" option in Yuan Bo, who looks awesome, but he's just another Dragon and I'll just be playing Zhao Ming again.

i didnt think it would be the monkey king, i thought it would be the lost sibling that they talked about in cathay's campaign.

Monkey King being most likely the one outlier, odd faction out etc re Cathay's potential line up of LL's. Given most factions should have at least 4 LL/startpos, there was always scope and time for another Dragon later on.
I'm not exactly salty that we have another Dragon now, and it's not the worst misstep or lost opportunity for CA or the game tbh. I haven't yet got into Cathay anyway as not fleshed out enough for me (yet) but a different LL template for them rn would've been better, even without considering lore aso. Let's hope we get LL Monkeh later then.
As for being 'paired' with The Changeling, I don't know enough about that lore so remain ambivalent.

yes, but to have 3 people locked into a rivalry with each other is much rarer than two people having a rivalry. they would really have to milk the rivalry concept to get 3 lords locked into a rivalry for every dlc.

yes they could have 2 characters have a rivalry with just 1 other character would not be nearly as interesting. it would also be very very weird because that would essentially put 2 of the lords in the backseat with 1 lord being the main focus, after all it would mean that you are focussing on that lords rivalry with others.

It's already been said by CA that GW does not intend for her fate to ever be revealed. She is meant to be a mystery, not ever a playable character.

Both the Total War and the Warhammer communities have a history of speculating about future releases, deciding that their speculation must be correct and then getting mad when that thing they made up turns out to not be true.

The other recent example is all the folks getting mad that Pharaoh is not a Medieval II sequel.
