Nah, bad advise. You're being too precious about losing settlements and hurting yourself in the process. Just go out sacking every settlement, then raze if minor or occupy if major. Don't worry about babysitting anything. It isn't the end of the world if you lose settlements, since you can easily spawn a blood host to go get it back without losing momentum. As long as you don't lose your capital or a settlement that you already invested a lot on it, it's no big deal. Also, it's just a matter of being smart about it. Don't invest on settlements that are too exposed to enemy attacks, this way if you lose it, you won't be losing a meaningful amount of gold. It's good practice to invest first on the core of your Empire, and treat fringe settlements as acceptable liabilities.
